Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves whose occupants (that is, the people buried in them) were being punished. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These two are being punished, and they are not being punished for anything major (that is, it was not something difficult to avoid): one of them did not guard himself against urine, and the other used to go about spreading tales.
Then he called for a fresh palm branch, broke it, and placed (a piece) on this one and on this one, and said: "Perhaps it will be lightened for them until they dry out."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy, except that the case of al-Tabarani's teacher, Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Ja'far al-Waki'i al-Misri, is different, for I do not know him. Other hadiths on this subject will come in the chapter on the punishment of the grave.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was walking between me and another man when he came to two graves. He said: The occupants of these two graves are being punished; bring me a branch, both of you! Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My companion and I raced each other, and I brought him a branch. He split it into two parts, placed one part on one grave and the other on the other grave, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: As long as these two (branches) do not dry, the punishment of these two people will remain lightened. These two are not being punished for a major sin (that is, it is not a sin that is difficult to avoid; the two sins are): backbiting, and urine (not guarding against its splashes).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Imam Ahmad also recorded it; these are the words of al-Tabarani's report. These two are being punished only for backbiting and urine (not guarding against its splashes)."

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once, on an intensely hot day, the Prophet went towards "Baqi' al-Gharqad". The narrator says: People began walking behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the sound of their footsteps, he found this disagreeable, so he sat down until he had let the people go ahead of him, so that nothing of pride should occur in his heart. When he passed by "Baqi' al-Gharqad", there were two graves there in which two men had been buried. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped there and asked: Whom have you buried here today? The people said: So-and-so and so-and-so. The people asked: O Prophet of Allah! What is the matter? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: One of them did not guard himself against urine, and the other used to spread tales. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a fresh branch, split it into two, and placed them on the two graves. The people asked: O Prophet of Allah! Why have you done this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: So that (their punishment) remains lightened for them. The people asked: O Prophet of Allah! Until when will these two be punished? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is a matter of the unseen which none knows except Allah Almighty. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Were it not for the scattering of thoughts in your hearts and your excessive talking, you too would hear what I hear.
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain mentions that Ali bin Yazid bin Ali al-Alhani narrated it from al-Qasim, and both of these narrators are da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Shufayy bin Mati' al-Asbahi (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are four kinds of people who will cause the people of Hell further harm on top of the torment that already afflicts them. They will run back and forth between the scalding water (al-hamim) and the blazing fire (al-jahim), crying out for woe and destruction. The people of Hell will say to one another: We were already suffering torment, and these people have caused us further torment." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of them will be a man shut up in a coffin made of embers; one will be a man dragging his intestines; one will be a man from whose mouth pus and blood flow; and one will be a man eating his own flesh." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It will be said to the man of the coffin: What is the matter with this wretch who has caused us further harm on top of the torment that already afflicts us? He will say: When this wretch died, he owed people wealth, and there was no way to repay it. (Then the people of Hell) will say to the one dragging his intestines: What is the matter with this wretch who has caused us further harm on top of the torment that already afflicts us? He will say: This wretch did not care where urine got on him; he would not wash it. Then it will be said to the one from whose mouth pus and blood flow: What is the matter with this wretch who has caused us further harm on top of the torment that already afflicts us? He will say: This wretch used to eat the flesh of people (that is, he would backbite them and spread tales about them)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; it is recorded like this in the original manuscript that was heard, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) reports about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that it was his habit to guard himself against (the splashes of) urine, and he would command his Companions to do the same. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Most of the punishment of the grave is because of urine.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Rishdin bin Sa'd, whom most scholars declared da'if (weak), while Imam Ahmad said: His hadith on matters that soften the heart (al-raqa'iq) may be tolerated. It is reported about Sayyidah Maymunah bint Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell us the ruling: what causes the punishment of the grave? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The traces of urine (that is, its splashes). If urine gets on anyone, he should wash that place, and if he does not find water, he should wipe it with pure earth.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its chain consists of narrators who range between da'if (weak) and majhul (unknown).

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) urinating while sitting, keeping his thighs so wide apart that I felt distressed for him (for bearing such strain) for so long a sitting. When he came back, he made the sign of sixty-three with his hand and then said: The man of the Children of Israel was more careful about urine than you are; he had a pair of scissors with him, and if any urine got on his garment, he would cut it off.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; from this Companion a hadith different from this one is recorded in the "Sahih". The chain of this report contains a narrator, Ali bin Asim, who made many errors and mistakes; he would be alerted to his mistake but would not retract, and he used to belittle the hadith masters (huffaz).
