Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Jaz' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that anyone should cleanse himself (istinja) with bone, dung or charcoal.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar, and these are his (al-Bazzar's) words; its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the dawn (Fajr) prayer in the mosque of Madinah. When he had finished the prayer, he asked: Who will go with me tonight to meet the delegation of the jinn? The people remained silent; not one of them said anything. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times. Then he passed by me and he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my hand, and I began walking with him until all the mountains of Madinah were hidden from us and we came out into open land. There were tall men there like spears, who had tucked their garments between their legs. When I saw them, a severe trembling came over me, so much so that my legs began to shake from the intensity of fear. When we drew near to them, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a line on the ground for me with the big toe of his foot and said to me: Sit in the middle of it! When I sat down, all the unease I had been feeling went away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went (and stood) between me and those people, and he kept reciting the Qur'an in a loud voice until true dawn broke. Then he came back, and when he reached me he said: Come along with me! I began walking with him. We had not gone far when he said: Turn and look! Do you see anything where those people were? I said: O Messenger of Allah! There seem to be many figures there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lowered his head towards the ground, then he joined a bone together with a piece of dung and threw it towards them. Then he said: This is guidance for them from me. This was the delegation of a people; it was the delegation of "Nasibin". They asked me for provision, so I assigned every bone and piece of dung for them (as provision). Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Now it is never permissible for anyone to cleanse himself (istinja) with bone or dung.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its chain is hasan (good); there is no (weakness) in it except Baqiyyah, and he too has explicitly stated that he heard it directly (tahdith).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me to follow him. He said: A group of fifteen jinn, who are cousins and nephews of one another, will come to me tonight, and I will recite the Qur'an to them. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I went with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the place where he intended to go. He drew a line for me and told me to sit, and he said: Do not go outside this! I remained there through the night until, close to the pre-dawn (suhur) time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me. In his blessed hand there was an old, decayed bone, a piece of dung and a piece of charcoal. He said: When you go to relieve yourself, do not cleanse yourself (istinja) with any of these (three things). Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The next morning I thought: I will examine the place where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had gone. I went there and saw the resting place of seventy camels.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, whom the Imams, namely Imam Ahmad and others, declared da'if (weak), while Yahya bin Ma'in and Abd al-Malik bin Shu'ayb bin al-Layth declared him thiqah (trustworthy); the remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
Abdullah has a long hadith that will come in the chapter on the signs of Prophethood; Imam Ahmad recorded it.
