Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I have not seen a better people than the Companions of the Messenger of Allah. Until the passing away of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about only 13 things, all of which are mentioned in the Qur'an: "They ask you about the sacred month", "They ask you about wine and gambling", "They ask you about orphans", "They ask you about menstruation", "They ask you about the spoils of war (al-anfal)", "They ask you what they should spend". (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, says:) They used to ask only about what would benefit them. (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, says:) The first to perform tawaf around the Ka'bah were the angels, and between the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner there are graves of some of the Prophets. When a Prophet was harmed by the people of his nation, he would leave from among them (and come to the Ka'bah) and worship Allah Almighty here until he died.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ata' bin al-Sa'ib; he is thiqah (trustworthy), but he suffered from confusion (ikhtilat). The rest of the narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).

Hadith Takhrij «
Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had performed the Fajr prayer, we would turn towards him (peace and blessings be upon him). Some of us would ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) about the Qur'an, some of us would ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) about inheritance, and some of us would ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) about dreams (and their interpretation).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Umar al-Rawi, whom Abu Dawud and Abu Zur'ah declared da'if (weak), while Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the mosque. The people thought that perhaps revelation was descending upon him, so they did not address him (peace and blessings be upon him). Meanwhile Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived and came and sat by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to him and asked: O Abu Dharr! Have you performed (voluntary) prayer today? He submitted: No! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Get up and perform prayer! When Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) had performed four rak'ahs of the Duha (forenoon) prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to him and said: O Abu Dharr! Seek refuge with Allah from the devils of the jinn and of mankind! Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Prophet of Allah! Are there devils among mankind too? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! (Allah Almighty has said:) "There are some from among mankind and the jinn who inspire one another with adorned speech in order to deceive." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Dharr! Shall I not teach you words that are from the treasures of Paradise? I replied: Yes! May Allah Almighty make me a ransom for you! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (There is no might and no power except with Allah)! I said: 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.' The narrator says: Then I remained waiting for him to speak. Then I submitted: O Prophet of Allah! We were people of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) who used to worship idols; then Allah Almighty sent you as a mercy for all the worlds. What is your view about prayer? What is it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is an excellent thing; whoever wishes may take a little of it and whoever wishes may take much. I asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is your view about fasting? What is it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is an obligation that brings reward (or that suffices). I asked: O Prophet of Allah! What is your view about charity? What is it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (It is something whose reward) is multiplied many times over, and with Allah Almighty there is more (reward and recompense). The narrator says: I asked: O Prophet of Allah! Which charity is most excellent? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Giving something secretly to a poor person, or (the charity) of a person of meagre means who has laboured for it. I submitted: O Prophet of Allah! Which is the greatest (verse) revealed to you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all" — that is, Ayat al-Kursi. I submitted: O Prophet of Allah! Which martyr is most excellent? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one whose blood is shed and whose horse's legs are cut. I submitted: O Prophet of Allah! (Freeing) which slave is most excellent? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one whose price is highest and who is most precious to his owners. The narrator says: I submitted: O Prophet of Allah! Which Prophet was the first? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him). I submitted: O Prophet of Allah! Was Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) a Prophet? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! He was a Prophet who was spoken to. Allah Almighty created him with His Hand and breathed His spirit into him, then said to him: O Adam, face forward! The narrator says: I submitted: O Prophet of Allah! How many Prophets were there? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: One hundred and twenty-four thousand, and of them the number of Messengers was 315, which is a large number.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, but they recorded these words: (Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, may Allah be pleased with him, asked:) How many Prophets were there? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: One hundred and twenty-four thousand. The chain of this narration revolves around a narrator named Ali bin Yazid, and he is da'if (weak).

Was he a Prophet? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! He was a Prophet who was spoken to. I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! How many Messengers are there? He said: Somewhat more than 310, a large number. On one occasion the narrator reported these words: 315. I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Was Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) a Prophet? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! He was spoken to. I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Which is the greatest verse revealed to you? Ahmad, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded something similar; al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded part of this narration. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Mas'udi, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but suffered from confusion (ikhtilat). In al-Tabarani's narration there is an addition; that narration will come later in the chapter on history.
