Writing down knowledge

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate: (Once) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us with a cloth bound around his head. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and said: "What is the matter with these writings which, as has reached me, you are noting down? Will something be noted down alongside the Book of Allah? Soon Allah Almighty will become angry for the sake of His Book, and then it will be taken away by night, so that He (Allah Almighty) will not leave a single letter of it in any page or in any heart without taking it away." One of those present said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then what will become of the believing men and the believing women?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever Allah Almighty intends good for, He will leave La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah) remaining in his heart."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Isa bin Maymun al-Wasiti, who is matruk (abandoned), though Hammad bin Salamah declared him thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Children of Israel wrote a book and began to follow it, and they abandoned the Torah."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Uthman bin Abi Shaybah, who is thiqah (trustworthy), though more than one scholar has declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we were sitting and noting down the things we had heard from the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What are you noting down?" We said: "The things we have heard from you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will something else be noted down alongside the Book of Allah? Leave only the Book of Allah." The narrator says: We gathered everything we had noted down in one open place and then burned it with fire. We said: "O Messenger of Allah! May we narrate hadiths on your authority?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! Narrate hadith on my authority; there is no harm in it. And whoever deliberately attributes a lie to me should prepare to reach his designated abode in Hell." The narrator says: We said: "O Messenger of Allah! May we narrate reports about the Children of Israel?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! Narrate reports about the Children of Israel; there is no harm in it. Whatever you narrate about them, there was something even more astonishing than it among them." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: in the "Sahih" this hadith is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), but without this context.
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam, who is da'if (weak), and the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not note down anything from me except the Qur'an. Whoever has noted down from me anything other than the Qur'an should erase that writing. Narrate reports about the Children of Israel; there is no harm in it." Then the narrator mentioned the full hadith.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam, who is da'if (weak).

Abu Burdah, son of Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: I noted down some things on the authority of my father. He said: "Had it not contained verses of the Book of Allah, I would have burned it." Then he called for a tub or a large vessel and washed that writing away. Then he said: "Whatever you hear from me, preserve it in your memory, but do not note down anything from me, for I too did not note down any writing from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). (If you note things down from me,) you are close to (that is, there is the possibility that you will be) destroying your father."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar recorded something similar, except that he recorded these words: "Memorise just as we memorised (things) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

This report is also narrated from Abu Burdah. He says: Whenever I heard a hadith from my father, I would note it down. Once he asked: "O my son! What are you doing?" I replied: "I note down whatever narrations I hear from you." He said: "Bring that (writing) to me." I read that writing out to him, and he said: "Yes! This is how I heard it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but I fear that something may have been added to it or left out."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Khalid bin Nafi', whom Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him), Imam Abu Zur'ah and others declared da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There was no one more knowledgeable of the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) than me, except for Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), for he would note down the hadith with his hand and also preserve it in his heart, whereas I would preserve it in my heart but not note it down with my hand. He asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to note down hadith, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission.
Imam Ahmad recorded it. Part of it is narrated in the "Sahih" in a different context, without mention of his asking permission to write and other matters. It is narrated by Ibn Ishaq from Amr bin Shu'ayb; Ibn Ishaq is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain), and Amr has been criticised.

Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Narrate hadith, but whoever attributes a lie to me should prepare to reach his designated abode in Hell." (The narrator says:) I said: "O Messenger of Allah! We hear things from you; may we note them down?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Note them down; there is no harm in it."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Mudrik, who narrated from Rifa'ah bin Rafi', and Baqiyyah narrated from him; I have not seen anyone mention him.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Some of his Companions were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I was with them, the youngest of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever deliberately attributes a lie to me should prepare to reach his designated abode in Hell." When the people left, I said: "How do you narrate hadith on the authority of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when you have heard what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (about the consequence of attributing anything false to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), and yet you are engrossed in narrating hadith on the authority of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" They laughed and said: "O our nephew! Everything we have heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is with us in writing."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; the chain of this narration contains a narrator, Ishaq bin Yahya bin Talhah, who is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Shall I bind knowledge?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes!" I asked: "What is the way of binding it?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Writing it down."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin al-Mu'ammal, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy). Ibn Sa'd said: "He is thiqah (trustworthy) but narrated few hadiths." Imam Ahmad said: "His hadiths are munkar (denounced)."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bind knowledge!" I said: "What is the way of binding it?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Writing it down."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin al-Mu'ammal, the discussion about whom has already passed in the preceding hadith, which you have seen.

Thumamah narrates: Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to us: "Bind knowledge by writing it down."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about his poor memory, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seek help from your right hand (that is, write things down)."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Isma'il bin Sayf, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about his poor memory, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seek help from your right hand for remembering (that is, write things down)."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, al-Khasib bin Jahdar, who is a kadhdhab (liar).
