Mubarak bin Fadalah narrates: Isma'il bin Ibrahim (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the wording is:) Ibrahim bin Isma'il stood before al-Hasan al-Basri and said: "O Abu Sa'id! We have heard many hadiths from you which you narrate on the authority of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); state their chains of transmission for us." Al-Hasan al-Basri said: "Ask about whichever (hadith) you wish." That man said: "The hadith narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the establishment of the Hour (state its chain)." Al-Hasan al-Basri replied: "Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); and Abdullah bin Qudamah, who was a truthful man, narrated this hadith to me from Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Sari' (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
The narrator says: So those people stood up and said: "We cannot prevail over this elder (that is, al-Hasan al-Basri)."
Al-Bazzar recorded it in this way; its chain contains Mubarak bin Fadalah, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain).
