Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I used to write down the revelation for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When revelation descended upon him (peace and blessings be upon him), he would experience great intensity and would sweat profusely, sweat like pearls. When this state of his (peace and blessings be upon him) passed, I would bring a piece of (an animal's) shoulder blade or of something else and note down the revelation, while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dictated it to me. Before the writing was complete, it felt as though my leg would break from the weight of the Qur'an, until I thought: "Now I will never be able to walk on this leg again." When I had finished, he said: "Read it out to me." I would read it out to him, and if there was any mistake in it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have it corrected; then I would take it out to the people.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy; however, its chain contains the statement: "I found this in the writing of my maternal uncle," so it is a narration by way of "wijadah" (found in writing).
