Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil narrates that he heard Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: I learned about a man that he had heard a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So I bought a camel, fastened my saddle on it, and travelled for a month until I reached Syria. That man was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Unays (may Allah be pleased with him). I said to the doorkeeper: "Tell him: Jabir is at the door." The doorkeeper asked: "The son of Abdullah?" I replied: "Yes." So Abdullah bin Unays came out treading on his garment (that is, in haste) and embraced me. I said: "I have learned about a hadith from you, that you heard it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); it is about retribution (qisas, that is, settling of rights on the Day of Resurrection). I feared that you or I might die before I heard it." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Unays (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "On the Day of Resurrection, Allah Almighty will gather the people (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) the servants, naked, uncircumcised and 'buhm'." (The narrator says: We asked: "What does 'buhm' mean?" He said: "They will have nothing with them.") "Then Allah Almighty will call out to them with a voice that one who is far will hear just as one who is near hears it, (saying): 'I am al-Dayyan (the Judge), I am the Sovereign. It is not fitting for any of the people of Hell to enter Hell while he owes a right to any of the people of Paradise, until I have settled it for him; and it is not fitting for any of the people of Paradise to enter Paradise while he owes a right to any of the people of Hell, until I have settled it, even if it is the matter of a slap.'" The narrator says: We said: "How can this (retribution) happen, when we will come (to the plain of gathering) naked, uncircumcised and with nothing with us?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(On the Day of Resurrection, in recompense, there will be an exchange of) good deeds and bad deeds."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains the narrator Abdullah bin Muhammad, who is da'if (weak).

Makhul narrates: Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the house of Sayyiduna Maslamah bin Mukhallad (may Allah be pleased with him), and an altercation took place between him and the doorkeeper. Sayyiduna Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) heard his voice and gave him permission to come in. Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "I have not come to you to visit you; rather, I have come for a matter. Do you remember the day when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever comes to know of some fault of his brother and then conceals it, Allah Almighty will conceal (his faults) on the Day of Resurrection'?" Sayyiduna Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes." Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "That is what I came for."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in this way in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, while in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat it is reported from Muhammad bin Sirin, who said: Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) set out, and then he mentioned it in abridged form. The narrators of the version in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir are the narrators of the Sahih.

Abd al-Malik bin Umayr reports from Munib, from his paternal uncle, who said: One of the Companions of the Prophet came to know about another Companion that he narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever conceals (the faults of) his Muslim brother in this world, Allah Almighty will conceal (his faults) on the Day of Resurrection." So that Companion travelled to the other Companion, who was in Egypt, and asked him about the hadith. The other Companion said: "Yes! I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever conceals (the faults of) his Muslim brother in this world, Allah Almighty will conceal (his faults) on the Day of Resurrection.'" Then that Companion (the one who had travelled from Madinah to Egypt) said: "I too have heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Imam Ahmad recorded it. As for this narrator Munib, if he is Munib bin Abdullah, then Imam Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) declared him thiqah (trustworthy); and if someone else is meant, then I have not seen anyone mention him.

Ibn Jurayj narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) rode (that is, travelled from Madinah) to Egypt to meet Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: "I wish to ask you about a matter; of those who were present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at that time, none remain except you and me. (I wish to ask:) What did you hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say about concealing (the faults of) a Muslim?" Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever conceals a hidden matter of a believer in this world, Allah Almighty will conceal (his faults) on the Day of Resurrection.'" Then Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) set off from there back to Madinah; he had not even unfastened his saddle until Sayyiduna Uqbah narrated this hadith to him.
Imam Ahmad recorded it in this way, with a munqati' (broken) chain.

Raja' bin Haywah narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Maslamah bin Mukhallad (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "When I was governor of Egypt, the doorkeeper came to me and said: 'There is a Bedouin at the door on his camel asking permission to come in.' I asked: 'Who are you?' He said: 'Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari.'" Sayyiduna Maslamah bin Mukhallad (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I looked down at him from above and asked: 'Shall I come down to you, or will you come up?' He said: 'Neither you come down nor will I come up. I have been informed about a hadith that you narrate from the Messenger of Allah, and that hadith is about concealing (the faults of) a believer. I have come to hear it.'" (Sayyiduna Maslamah bin Mukhallad (may Allah be pleased with him) says:) "I said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever conceals a hidden matter of a believer, it is as though he has given life to a girl who was to be buried alive.'" Then Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) struck his camel and set off back.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Abu Sinan al-Qasmali, whom Ibn Hibban, and Ibn Khirash according to one report, declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Imam Ahmad, Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and Yahya bin Ma'in declared him da'if (weak).
