Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The hypocrites have particular signs by which they are recognised: their greeting is a curse, their food is something snatched, their spoils of war are obtained through treachery; they approach the mosques only to say evil things loudly, and they turn their backs on the prayer, doing so out of arrogance; they neither show affection (to the Muslims) nor are shown affection; they are logs of wood by night and clamorous by day." The narrator named Yazid once reported the word 'sukhub' (with the letter sin) in place of the word 'sukhub' (with the letter sad).
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Abd al-Malik bin Qudamah al-Jumahi, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) and others called him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Three things, the one in whom they are found is a hypocrite, even if he fasts, prays, has performed Hajj and Umrah, and says: I am a Muslim. (Those three things are:) when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains Yazid al-Raqashi, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Once Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the traits of a hypocrite is that when he speaks, he says what is false; when he makes a promise, he goes against it; and when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust." When these two left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they were both troubled. I met the two of them and asked: What is the matter? I see you both troubled. They said: The reason is a hadith which we heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he said: "Among the traits of a hypocrite is that when he speaks, he says what is false; when he makes a promise, he goes against it; and when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust." Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did you not ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? They replied: Out of awe of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (we did not ask him (peace and blessings be upon him)). Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Then I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met me and they were both troubled; then I mentioned what the two of them had said. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did tell them this, but I did not intend by it the meaning that the two of them have taken. What it means is that when the hypocrite says something, he is thinking in his heart that he will lie; when he makes a promise, he is thinking in his heart that he will break it; and when he is entrusted with something, he is thinking in his heart that he will betray the trust."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain mentions that Abu al-Nu'man narrated it from Abu Waqqas, and both of these narrators are majhul (unknown), as al-Tirmidhi stated; the remaining narrators of this report have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Three things, the one in whom they are found is a hypocrite, and if one of them is found in someone, then there is a trait of hypocrisy in him: when he speaks, he lies; when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust; and when he makes a promise, he goes against it."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "Judge the hypocrites by three things: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he makes a covenant, he betrays it. Allah Almighty revealed in His Book, in confirmation of this: 'And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: If He gives us from His bounty.'" This is to the end of the verse.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
