Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The hypocrites have particular signs by which they are recognised: their greeting is a curse, their food is something snatched, their spoils of war are obtained through treachery; they approach the mosques only to say evil things loudly, and they turn their backs on the prayer, doing so out of arrogance; they neither show affection (to the Muslims) nor are shown affection; they are logs of wood by night and clamorous by day." The narrator named Yazid once reported the word 'sukhub' (with the letter sin) in place of the word 'sukhub' (with the letter sad).
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Abd al-Malik bin Qudamah al-Jumahi, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) and others called him da'if (weak).
