Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Once Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the traits of a hypocrite is that when he speaks, he says what is false; when he makes a promise, he goes against it; and when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust." When these two left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they were both troubled. I met the two of them and asked: What is the matter? I see you both troubled. They said: The reason is a hadith which we heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he said: "Among the traits of a hypocrite is that when he speaks, he says what is false; when he makes a promise, he goes against it; and when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust." Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did you not ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? They replied: Out of awe of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (we did not ask him (peace and blessings be upon him)). Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Then I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met me and they were both troubled; then I mentioned what the two of them had said. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did tell them this, but I did not intend by it the meaning that the two of them have taken. What it means is that when the hypocrite says something, he is thinking in his heart that he will lie; when he makes a promise, he is thinking in his heart that he will break it; and when he is entrusted with something, he is thinking in his heart that he will betray the trust."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain mentions that Abu al-Nu'man narrated it from Abu Waqqas, and both of these narrators are majhul (unknown), as al-Tirmidhi stated; the remaining narrators of this report have been declared trustworthy.
