Major sins

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Avoid the major sins!"
Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever presents himself before Allah Almighty in such a state that he associates no partner with Him, pays the zakah on his wealth willingly, hoping for reward, and listens and obeys, then Paradise will be granted to him (the narrator is in doubt, or perhaps the words are:) he will enter Paradise. And there are five things for which there is no expiation: associating partners with Allah Almighty, killing a soul unjustly, slandering a believer, fleeing from the battlefield, and a false oath by means of which a person unjustly seizes someone's wealth."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Baqiyyah, who is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain), and he narrated it with 'an'anah (using the word 'from' without stating that he heard it).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty curse the one who slaughters (an animal) in the name of other than Allah; may Allah Almighty curse the one who changes the boundary markers of land; may Allah Almighty curse the one who misleads a blind person from the road; may Allah Almighty curse the one who reviles his parents; and may Allah Almighty curse the one who claims allegiance (wala') to someone other than his true patrons."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the major sins, the first is associating partners with Allah; (and the other major sins are:) killing a soul unjustly, consuming usury (riba), consuming the wealth of an orphan, fleeing from the battlefield, accusing chaste women, and returning to the desert life of the Bedouins after having emigrated."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Umar bin Abi Salamah, whom Shu'bah and others declared da'if (weak), while Abu Hatim, Ibn Hibban and others declared him thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you about the greatest of the major sins? Associating partners with Allah, and disobedience to parents." The narrator states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the manner of ihtiba' (with his knees drawn up and wrapped in his garment). He undid his wrap, took hold of the tip of his tongue and said: "Beware! And false speech (is also among the greatest of the major sins)."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Umar bin al-Musawir, and he is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected).

Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is your opinion about the fornicator, the thief and the one who drinks wine?" The people said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These are shameful deeds, and there is a punishment for them. But shall I not tell you about the greatest of the major sins? (They are:) associating partners with Allah." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Whoever associates partners with Allah has indeed fabricated a tremendous sin." "(And the second great sin) is disobedience to parents." Then he recited this verse: "Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final return." (The narrator states:) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting reclining; he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat up straight and said: "Beware! And false speech too (is among the major sins)." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: "Everything that Allah Almighty has forbidden, (committing it) counts as a major sin."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that the narrator al-Hasan is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain), and he narrated this with 'an'anah (using the word 'from' without stating that he heard it).

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Avoid the seven major sins!" The people remained silent and no one said anything. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you not ask me about them (that is, the major sins)? (They are:) associating partners with Allah Almighty, killing a soul, fleeing from the battlefield, consuming the wealth of an orphan, consuming usury (riba), accusing a chaste woman, and adopting the desert life of the Bedouins after having emigrated."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and said: "I swear! I swear!" Then he came down from the pulpit and said: "Receive glad tidings! Receive glad tidings! Whoever offers the five prayers and avoids the major sins will enter through whichever gate of Paradise he wishes." The narrator al-Muttalib states: I heard a man ask Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Did you hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mention them (the major sins)?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes! (These are the major sins:) disobedience to parents, associating partners with Allah Almighty, killing a soul, accusing chaste women, consuming the wealth of an orphan, fleeing from the battlefield, and consuming usury (riba)."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Muslim bin al-Walid bin al-Abbas, and I have not seen anyone who mentions him.

Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three things along with which no deed will be of benefit: associating partners with Allah Almighty, disobedience to parents, and fleeing from the battlefield."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Yazid bin Rabi'ah, who is extremely weak.

Sayyiduna Salamah bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Perhaps the narrator states:) They are four things, and I hold to them as firmly today as on the day I heard about them from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "Beware! Do not associate anything as a partner with Allah; do not kill the soul which Allah Almighty has made sacred, except by right; do not commit fornication; and do not steal."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three things such that, if a person has none of them, Allah Almighty will forgive whomever He wills (from that person's sins other than these): one who dies in such a state that he associates no partner with Allah Almighty, was not a sorcerer who follows the sorcerers, and does not harbour hostility against his brother."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Layth bin Abi Sulaym.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The major sins are seven: associating partners with Allah Almighty; killing the soul which Allah Almighty has made sacred, except by its right; accusing a chaste woman; fleeing from the battlefield; consuming usury (riba); consuming the wealth of an orphan; and returning to the desert life of the Bedouins after having emigrated."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Bilal al-Ash'ari, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states: A man asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Which are the major sins?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Associating partners with Allah Almighty, losing hope in the relief of Allah Almighty, and despairing of the mercy of Allah Almighty."
Al-Bazzar and Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The major sins are: associating partners with Allah, feeling secure from the plan of Allah Almighty, despairing of the mercy of Allah Almighty, and losing hope in His relief.
In one narration the words are: "The greatest of the major sins." Its chain is sahih (authentic).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "I take your pledge on this: that you will not associate anything as a partner with Allah; you will not kill any soul which Allah Almighty has made sacred, except by right; you will not commit fornication; you will not steal; and you will not drink any intoxicant. Whoever does any of these things and then the prescribed punishment (hadd) is carried out on him, it will be an expiation for him; and whoever Allah Almighty conceals, his reckoning rests with Allah Almighty; and whoever does none of these things, I guarantee Paradise for him from Allah Almighty."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its narrators have been declared trustworthy, except that it is from the narration of Amr bin Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "His fire will not be extinguished, his worms will not die, and his punishment will not be lightened: the one who associates partners with Allah; the one who seizes an innocent person and takes him to the ruler, and the ruler kills him; and the one who is disobedient to his parents."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, al-Ala' bin Sinan, whom Ahmad declared da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Unays al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the greatest of the major sins are associating partners with Allah and the false oath (al-yamin al-ghamus)."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and the complete narration will come in the chapter on oaths and vows; its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) states: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a deed such that, when I do it, I will enter Paradise." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not associate anything as a partner with Allah, even if you are tortured or burned; obey your parents, even if they drive you out of your wealth and everything that is yours; do not abandon the prayer deliberately, for whoever abandons the prayer deliberately, the protection of Allah Almighty is free of him; do not drink wine, for it is the key to every evil; do not dispute authority with those who hold it, even if you think it is your right; spend on your family from your means; do not lift your staff from them; and keep them mindful of the fear of Allah Almighty."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Amr bin Waqid, whom Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and a group declared da'if (weak), while al-Thawri says: "He was saduq (truthful)."

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The greatest of the major sins are: associating partners with Allah Almighty, disobedience to parents, withholding surplus water, and withholding a stud animal (for breeding)."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Salih bin Hayyan, who is da'if (weak), and no one has declared him trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three people about whom no inquiry will be made: the man who separates from the community, disobeys his leader and dies in a state of disobedience; the slave woman or slave who runs away from his master and dies in that state; and the woman whose husband is away from her, having provided for her worldly needs, and in her husband's absence she displays her adornment. And there are three people about whom no inquiry will be made: the man who contends with Allah Almighty over His cloak, and His cloak is grandeur and His lower garment is might (dominance); the man who is in doubt about the command of Allah Almighty; and the one who despairs of the mercy of Allah Almighty."
Al-Bazzar and Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it; he recorded it as two separate hadiths. Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The angels continue to curse a woman (the narrator is in doubt, or perhaps the words are:) Allah Almighty, His angels, the angels in charge of mercy and the angels in charge of punishment curse her, as long as she commits any act of disobedience to Allah Almighty."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ubaydullah bin Salman al-Agharr, whom Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) declared thiqah (trustworthy), and Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned him in the book al-Du'afa'. Abu Hatim says: "He should be moved out of the book al-Du'afa', for I have not seen any munkar (rejected) hadith from him."

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of filth are ruined."
(Allamah Haythami says:) Ibn al-Athir stated in the book al-Nihayah: "The people of filth" means those who commit filthy (shameful) deeds.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Sa'id al-Maqburi, and he is extremely weak.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: You people do certain deeds which in your eyes are finer than a hair, yet in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to count them among the deeds that bring destruction.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Abbad bin Rashid, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Abu Dawud and others declared him da'if (weak).
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) Various chains of this hadith will come in the chapter on repentance, in sha' Allah.
