Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that when Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became caliph, he and his family took their expenses from the public treasury, and he also earned wealth for himself.
(b) Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people when he became caliph. When morning came, he set off towards the market. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Where do you intend to go? He said: To the market. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You now carry a responsibility that will keep you busy away from the market. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah)! Will it keep me from (providing for) my family too? He said: An allowance will be fixed for you in a fair manner. Then he mentioned the hadith. In it is that he directed in his will that the wealth received from the public treasury be returned.
