Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked which animals should be avoided in sacrifice. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, gesturing with his hand: "The sacrifice of four kinds of animals should be avoided." Al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him), gesturing with his hand, said: My hand is shorter than the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "A lame animal whose lameness is evident, a one-eyed animal whose loss of an eye is evident, a sick animal whose sickness is clear, and an old animal that has no marrow in its bones."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade sacrificing an animal whose ear has been half cut off or whose horn has been half broken. Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Sa'id bin al-Musayyab (may Allah have mercy on him) about 'adb, and he said: "It means half or more."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade sacrificing an animal whose ear has been half cut off and whose horn has been half broken."
Thus it is in these two narrations; the first is the sounder of the two and the other is the weaker of the two. And a mawquf report contrary to this regarding the horn has been narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hujayyah says: We were with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man asked: "On behalf of how many people is a cow (sacrificed)?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "On behalf of seven." The man asked about the horn, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There is no harm in it." The man asked about lameness, and he said: "When the sacrificial animal reaches the place of sacrifice (then it is fine); the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to look carefully at the eye and the ear."

Hujayyah bin Adi narrates from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked about the cow, and he said: "It is on behalf of seven people." And when he was asked about an animal with a broken horn, he said: "There is no harm." The man asked about lameness, and he said: "When the sacrificial animal reaches the place of sacrifice (then it is fine); the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to look carefully at the ear and the eye."
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The horn being broken or absent does not harm the sacrificial animal.
