Yazid Dhu Misr says: I came to Sayyiduna Utbah bin Abd al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu al-Walid! I went out looking for a sacrificial animal and found nothing that pleased me except one with a broken tooth, and I disliked it. What do you say about it? He said: Why did you not bring it to me? I said: Subhan Allah! (Would it be) valid for you while it is not valid for me? He said: Yes, you are in doubt while I am not in doubt, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade "an animal whose ear has been cut off so that its ear-hole shows, one whose horn has been uprooted from its base, one whose eye has been gouged out, one that cannot keep up with the flock because of weakness, and an old animal whose bone marrow is gone."
