Ubayd bin Fayruz says: I asked Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) which animals the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to forbid for sacrifice. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured like this with his hand (but my hand is shorter than the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)): "It is not permissible to sacrifice four kinds of animals: a one-eyed animal whose loss of an eye is evident, a sick animal whose sickness is clear, a lame animal whose lameness is evident, and an old animal that has no marrow in its bones." The narrator says: I dislike a defect in the teeth or the ear. He said: Leave whatever you dislike, but do not declare it unlawful for anyone else.
