Abayah bin Rifa'ah narrates from his grandfather Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that they said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Tomorrow we will meet the enemy, and we have no knives." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever makes the blood flow and over which the name of Allah has been mentioned, eat it, but do not slaughter with a tooth or a nail, for the tooth is a bone and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians." The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) obtained spoils of war, and a camel from them bolted. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) tried to catch it but could not, so a man shot an arrow at it and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some camels run wild just as wild animals do; if any of them cannot be brought under control, shoot it with an arrow like this." And a camel fell into a well, and they could not slaughter it except from its flank, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) bought a tenth of it for two dirhams.

Abayah bin Rifa'ah bin Rafi' bin Khadij narrates from his grandfather Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him): We were at Dhu al-Hulayfah in the region of Tihamah. The people were hungry, and they came upon camels and sheep. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, the cooking pots were already on the fire, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the pots to be overturned. Then he distributed (the spoils), counting one camel as equal to ten sheep. The narrator said: A camel bolted, and the people had only a weak horse; a man shot an arrow at it and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some camels run wild just as wild animals do; if any of them cannot be brought under control, shoot it with an arrow like this."

May we slaughter with reeds?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever makes the blood flow and over which the name of Allah has been mentioned, it is permissible to eat, provided it is not a tooth or a nail, and I will tell you about that: the tooth is a bone and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians."

Abdul Rahman and Muhammad, the two sons of Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), narrate from their father that he said: A runaway, unmanageable cow passed by us; it would not pass anyone without butting him and charging at him. We went out after it, pursuing it until it was exhausted, until we reached al-Samma'. With us was a Coptic slave boy belonging to Banu Haram, and he had a short sword. The cow charged at him to butt him, so he struck it below the place of slaughter and above the joint of the shoulder, and it fell on its face, and there was no chance to slaughter it. Jabir said: I told the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he said: "When a domestic animal turns wild and cannot be controlled, then what makes a wild animal lawful also makes it lawful. Go back to your cow and eat it." So we went back to it and butchered it.

Abu al-Ushara' al-Darimi narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is slaughter done only at the throat?" The Shaykh said: This applies to an animal that falls into a well and things similar to it.

Ghadban, that is Ibn Yazid al-Bajali, narrates from his father: Some people came to Kufa, and a man of the neighbourhood (tribe) there held his wedding and bought a she-camel, but it bolted and was lost. Then he bought another one, and fearing that it too would bolt, he hamstrung it and mentioned the name of Allah, and it died. They came and asked Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he ordered them to eat it. But the people of the tribe were not willing to eat it until they brought a piece of it to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him); when he ate it, the people of the tribe also became willing to eat it.
