Abayah bin Rafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him): I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Tomorrow we will meet the enemy, and we have no knives. May we slaughter with the peel of a reed and the like?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever makes the blood flow and over which the name of Allah has been mentioned, eat it; but what is slaughtered with a nail or a tooth, do not eat it, for the tooth is a human bone and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians."

Abayah bin Rifa'ah narrates from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him): We said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Tomorrow we will meet the enemy, and we have no knives. May we slaughter with a piece of wood?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever makes the blood flow and over which the name of Allah has been mentioned, eat it; but what is slaughtered with a nail or a tooth, do not eat, for the tooth is a human bone and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians." The narrator said: We obtained camels and sheep, and one camel was counted as equal to ten sheep. A camel bolted, and it was stopped by shooting an arrow at it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some camels are like wild animals. When a camel bolts, treat it in the same way, and eat."

Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Tomorrow we will meet the enemy, and we have no knives." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hurry! Whatever makes the blood flow and over which the name of Allah has been mentioned, eat it, provided it was not slaughtered with a tooth or a nail. I will tell you: the tooth is a bone and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians." The hasty people slaughtered sheep and set the pots to cook, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at the very rear of the people. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by the pots, he ordered them to be overturned, and he distributed (the spoils) among them, counting one camel as equal to ten sheep. A camel belonging to the people bolted, and they had no horse with them. A man shot an arrow at it, and Allah stopped it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These camels run wild just as wild animals do. When a camel bolts, treat it in the same way and eat it."
