Ata' bin al-Sa'ib narrates from Amir that a Bedouin presented a deer as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where did you get this?" The Bedouin said: Yesterday evening I shot it with an arrow and kept searching for it until evening came, so I returned; then in the morning I followed its trail and found it lying in a cave or among rocks, and I recognised my arrowhead in it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It stayed away from you for a night, and I cannot be sure that some creature did not help you kill it; I have no need of it."

Abu Razin says that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with game and said: I shot it with an arrow and it exhausted me as I searched for it; then in the morning I found it and recognised my arrow. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The night is a mighty creation of Allah, the Lord of Might; perhaps something else helped you against it. Throw it away."

Abu Razin narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When the game disappears from you and then you come upon it suddenly," and he mentioned the creeping creatures of the earth.
This Abu Razin is Mas'ud, the freed slave of Shaqiq bin Salamah, and not Abu Razin the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); the hadith is mursal, as al-Bukhari said.

Amr bin Maymun narrates from his father that a Bedouin came to Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) while Maymun was with him. The Bedouin said: "May Allah set you right; I shoot game with an arrow and bring it down in front of me, and I also wound it and leave it. What is your view about this?" Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Eat the game that falls before you and dies, and do not eat what is wounded and falls far away."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصيد والذبائح / 18901
Abdullah bin Abi al-Hudhayl says: Some of my family asked me to ask Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about certain matters. I wrote them on a sheet and came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) at a time when people were asking him questions. When the people had asked all the questions I had written, and I had not asked him anything, a Bedouin asked: I am a slave who looks after the camels of my household; a man asks me for water, should I give him water? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Do not give him water. The Bedouin said: What if I fear that he will perish? He said: Give him enough water to save his life, then inform your household. The Bedouin said: I kill game on the spot and I also wound it. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: What you bring down on the spot, eat; and what is wounded and dies somewhere far away, do not eat. I asked al-Hakam: What is isma'? He said: "Killing on the spot." I asked: What is inma'? He said: "Game that becomes hidden from you."
This has also been narrated through another route from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), and it is da'if (weak).

Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Isma' is game which the dogs kill while you are watching, and inma' is game which dies out of your sight. Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: In my view nothing is permissible in this except this, unless something has been narrated about it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), which I suspect there has; then everything that contradicts the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) falls away, and neither opinion nor analogy is equal to it, for Allah Almighty has cut off every excuse through his (peace and blessings be upon him) word.

Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you send your dog after game with the name of Allah, and the dog kills the game and does not eat from it, then eat the game. If the dog eats something from the game, then do not eat the game, because the dog has hunted it for itself. And when other dogs join your dog over which the name of Allah was not mentioned when they were sent, if they kill the game and hold it, that is, keep it, then do not eat, because you do not know which one killed it. If you shoot game with an arrow and find that same game with your arrow after one or two days, then eat if you wish; if it falls into water and dies, do not eat."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصيد والذبائح / 18904
Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about hunting, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you release your arrow with the name of Allah, if you reach the game, eat; otherwise, if the game falls into water, you do not know whether it died because of the water or because of your arrow. If you find the game after one or two nights and there is no other mark on it besides the mark of your arrow, then if you wish to eat the game, eat."

Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), one of us shoots game with an arrow and then follows it for a day or two, and finds the game dead with his arrow still in it. May he eat it? He said: "If he wishes, he may eat it."

He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Eat whatever your bow brings back to you." He said: "Whether slaughtered or not slaughtered?" Then he said: "Even if it stays out of my sight?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if it stays out of your sight, as long as it has not gone bad, or you do not see in it the mark of an arrow other than yours." He said: "Give me a ruling about the vessels of the Magians: may they be used when one is compelled to?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wash them and then use them."

Umayr bin Salamah al-Damri said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a wounded donkey at a place called al-Rawha'. Muhammad bin Abi Bakr added in his narration: in the surrounding wilderness. It was said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This is a wounded donkey." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave it; its owner will come." Then a man from the tribe of Bahz came and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I hunted it; you may make use of it." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to distribute it among the companions. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) travelled on until he reached a place called al-Ithabah, which lies between al-Arj and al-Ruwaythah, and there was a deer lying curled up in the shade with an arrow in it. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stationed a man beside it so that no one would take it until all the people had passed.
