About this, the following verse of poetry was also said:
For the chiefs of Banu Lu'ayy, burning the spreading palm trees at a place called al-Buwayrah became an easy thing. You left your cooking pots with nothing in them, while the people's pots were boiling over.

Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) replied to it:

Urwah bin al-Zubayr said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) camped on a hillock near the fortress of Ta'if. He (peace and blessings be upon him) besieged them for more than ten nights, and Banu Thaqif fought with arrows and stones while they were inside the fortress of Ta'if. Many men of the Muslims and of Banu Thaqif were killed, and the Muslims cut down some of Banu Thaqif's grapevines to enrage them. Urwah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had commanded the Muslims: "Let each man cut down five date palms or five grapevines." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! These are abundant; their fruit has not been eaten. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered: "Cut down the trees whose fruit has been eaten; cut those first."

The narrator said: A group cut down grapevines to enrage them, and Banu Thaqif said: Do not ruin the property, for it will be either ours or yours. Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) besieged the people of Ta'if for seventeen days and set up a mangonel against them. Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith used to be objected to when he narrated it.
Al-Shaykh said: The objection was to the chain being connected, and it is also possible that what was objected to was the hurling of stones with mangonels on that day. Ibn Abi Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) besieged them for a month. I said: Did it reach you that he (peace and blessings be upon him) pelted them with stones by mangonel? He denied it and said: "This is not known."
Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set up mangonels against the people of Ta'if.
