Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah wearing a helmet (mighfar) on his head. Then a man came and said: O Messenger of Allah! Ibn Khatal is clinging to the curtains of the Ka'bah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kill him."

Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On the day of the Conquest of Makkah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted safety to everyone except four men and two women, and said about them: "Kill them, even if they are clinging to the curtains of the Ka'bah." The four were: Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl, Ibn Khatal, Miqyas bin Subabah and Abdullah bin Sa'd bin Abi Sarh. Of them, Ibn Khatal was found clinging to the curtains of the Ka'bah, so Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir and Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) raced towards him. Sayyiduna Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) was the younger of the two, so he got ahead of Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) and killed him. Miqyas bin Subabah was killed by the people in the marketplace. Sayyiduna Ikrimah (may Allah be pleased with him) set off on a sea voyage; when the boat began to sink, the people said: "Call upon Allah sincerely; your gods cannot save you." Sayyiduna Ikrimah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If they cannot save at sea, how will they save on land?" Then he prayed: "O Allah, I make a pledge to You: if You keep me safe, I will put my hand in the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I will find him forgiving and generous." So he came and became a Muslim. As for Abdullah bin Sa'd bin Abi Sarh, he took refuge with Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), who brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he would accept his pledge of allegiance. He raised his head and refused three times, then he accepted his pledge. Then he turned to his Companions and said: "Was there no man of sense among you? I held back from his pledge so that someone would kill him." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! How were we to know what was in your heart? You could have signalled with your eye." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Signalling with the eye does not befit any prophet."

Ibn Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The order concerning Ibn Abi Sarh was given only because he had accepted Islam and used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); then he went back to being a polytheist and joined (the people of) Makkah. And the order to kill Abdullah bin Khatal was given only because he had been a Muslim: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to collect zakah and sent a man of the Ansar with him, and he had with him a Muslim freed slave who served him. He stopped at a halting place and ordered the slave to slaughter a goat and prepare food for him. He went to sleep, and when he woke up the slave had not prepared anything for him, so he attacked him and killed him, and then apostatised and became a polytheist. He had a singing girl and her companion, who used to sing satirical verses against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to be killed along with him.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with two men of the Ash'aris (and he mentioned the hadith, until he said:) So he sent him over Yemen, then sent Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) after him. When he reached him, he laid out a cushion for him and said: Dismount. There was a man with him who was bound. He asked: What is this? He said: This man was a Jew who accepted Islam, then went back to his religion, the evil religion, and became a Jew. He said: I will not sit until he is killed; this is the judgement of Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Yes, sit down. He said three times: I will not sit until he is killed; this is the judgement of Allah and His Messenger. So he gave the order concerning him, and he was killed.

Abu Burdah (may Allah have mercy on him) said, regarding the story in the previous hadith: The man was brought to Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), and he invited him (to Islam) for about twenty nights. Then Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) came and he too invited him to Islam, but he refused, so he killed him.

Abd al-Malik bin Umayr said: I was present with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when al-Mustawrid bin Qabisah, a man of Banu Ijl, was brought, who had become a Christian after accepting Islam. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What is this I have heard about you? He said: What have you heard? He said: I have heard that you have become a Christian. He said: I am on the religion of the Messiah. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I too am on the religion of the Messiah. Then Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What do you say about him? He said something that was hidden from me, so Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Trample him. So he was trampled until he died. I said to the one next to me: What did he say? He said: He said that the Messiah is his Lord.

Harithah bin Mudarrib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I prayed the Fajr prayer with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). When he finished with the salam, a man stood up and told him that he had gone to the mosque of Banu Hanifah, the mosque of Abdullah bin al-Nawwahah, and heard their muezzin bearing witness in this way: "He bears witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Musaylimah the Liar is the Messenger of Allah," and that he found the people of the mosque upon the same. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Who is here? A group jumped up, and he said: Bring Ibn al-Nawwahah and his companions to me. They were brought while I was sitting there, and Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Ibn al-Nawwahah: Where is the Qur'an that you used to recite? He said: I used to shield myself from you with it. He said: Repent. He refused, so he ordered Sayyiduna Qarazah bin Ka'b al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), who took him out to the marketplace and struck off his head. Then I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: Whoever would like to see Ibn al-Nawwahah lying slain in the marketplace, let him go out and look at him. Harithah said: I was among those who went out, and he had been stripped. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) consulted the people about the rest of that group, and Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) advised him to kill them. Then Sayyiduna Jarir and Sayyiduna Ash'ath (may Allah be pleased with them both) stood up and said: No; rather, ask them to repent and make their clans guarantors for them. So he asked them to repent, they all repented, and he made their clans guarantors for them.
