It is narrated from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah that he said: I went to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: Will you tell me about the illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? She said: Certainly. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became ill, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have the people prayed?" I said: No, O Messenger of Allah! They are waiting for you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Put water in the tub for me." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The water was put out, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) bathed, then tried to get up, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) fainted. Then he came round and asked: "Have the people prayed?" He was told: They are waiting for you. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) told them to put water in the tub, and he bathed, then tried to get up, but again he fainted. Then he came round and asked: "Have the people prayed?" He was told: They are waiting for you. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) told them to put water in the tub, and he bathed, then tried to get up, but again he fainted. Then he regained consciousness and asked: "Have the people prayed?" It was said: The people are waiting for you, and they are sitting in the mosque for the Isha prayer. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the prayer. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) received the message, he told Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the prayer, because Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was very tender-hearted. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied that he was more entitled to it, so after that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) kept leading the prayers. One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) felt some improvement, and, supported by two men, one of whom was Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he came to the mosque at the time of Zuhr while Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading the prayer. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had come, he began to step back. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him not to step back and said: "Seat me beside him." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated beside Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was following him (peace and blessings be upon him) and the people were following Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting. Ubaydullah said: I went to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and he said: Tell me what Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) related to you about the illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So I told him, and he confirmed all of it and said: Did she not tell you the name of the other man who was with Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)? I said: No. He said: He was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hamzah bin Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) said that his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)) said: When the pain of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) grew severe, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is tender-hearted; when he stands in your place, the people will not be able to hear him because of his weeping. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said again: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the prayer." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) repeated what she had said, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are like the companions (women) of Yusuf. Tell Abu Bakr to lead the prayer."
Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because I feared that the people would take Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) as a bad omen, for I knew that whoever stood in his (peace and blessings be upon him) place, the people would think ill of him. So I wanted him (peace and blessings be upon him) to give the order to someone other than Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! Abu Bakr is 'raqiq al-qalb' (tender-hearted). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the prayer." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said the same thing again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the prayer; you are like 'sawahib Yusuf' (the companions of Yusuf)." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the prayer during the final illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), until Monday came. The people were in rows for the prayer when he (peace and blessings be upon him) lifted the curtain of the chamber and looked out. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing, and it seemed as if his (peace and blessings be upon him) face were a page of the Mushaf; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled. We noticed him, and we were about to break off our prayers. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sensed it and began to step back to join the row, (thinking) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was coming out for the prayer. But he (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured: "Complete your prayer." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went into the chamber and let the curtain fall, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away that very day.

Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) broke the sword of Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, addressed the people, presented his excuse to them and said: By Allah! I was never eager for leadership for a single day or night, nor did I desire it, nor did I ask Allah for it, either openly or in secret. But I feared tribulation (fitnah), and there is no comfort for me in leadership. Rather, I have been made responsible for a great task which I have no strength to bear except with the help of Allah. I wish that the strongest of people for it were in my place today. The Muhajirun accepted what he said and his excuse, and Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: We were angry only because we were left out of the consultation; we consider Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) the most entitled of people to it after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He is the companion of the cave and the second of the two, and we know his honour and his seniority. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to lead the people in prayer during his lifetime.
