Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) broke the sword of Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, addressed the people, presented his excuse to them and said: By Allah! I was never eager for leadership for a single day or night, nor did I desire it, nor did I ask Allah for it, either openly or in secret. But I feared tribulation (fitnah), and there is no comfort for me in leadership. Rather, I have been made responsible for a great task which I have no strength to bear except with the help of Allah. I wish that the strongest of people for it were in my place today. The Muhajirun accepted what he said and his excuse, and Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: We were angry only because we were left out of the consultation; we consider Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) the most entitled of people to it after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He is the companion of the cave and the second of the two, and we know his honour and his seniority. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to lead the people in prayer during his lifetime.
