Hamzah bin Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) said that his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)) said: When the pain of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) grew severe, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is tender-hearted; when he stands in your place, the people will not be able to hear him because of his weeping. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said again: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the prayer." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) repeated what she had said, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are like the companions (women) of Yusuf. Tell Abu Bakr to lead the prayer."
Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because I feared that the people would take Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) as a bad omen, for I knew that whoever stood in his (peace and blessings be upon him) place, the people would think ill of him. So I wanted him (peace and blessings be upon him) to give the order to someone other than Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).
