Ma'dan bin Abi Talhah al-Ya'mari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) praised and glorified Allah, then mentioned the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), then said: "O people! I saw (in a dream) as if a rooster pecked me once or twice, and I see this as nothing other than a sign that my death is near. Some people are urging me to nominate a successor, and Allah Almighty will never let His religion, His caliphate and that with which He sent His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) go to waste. If my end comes quickly, then (the matter will be decided by) consultation among these six people with whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased when he passed away. Whomever you pledge allegiance to, listen to him and obey. Many people will find fault with this; if they do so, they are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. I fought them with this hand of mine for Islam. And I am not leaving behind anything more important to me than 'al-kalalah' (a person who leaves neither parent nor child), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was never as stern with me about anything as he was about it; he (peace and blessings be upon him) jabbed my chest with his finger and said: 'O Umar! The verse of summer at the end of Surah al-Nisa' [Surah al-Nisa: 176] is sufficient for you.' If I live, I will give a judgement on it about which no one will differ, whether he reads the Qur'an or does not read the Qur'an. And I call Allah to witness over the governors of the provinces: I sent them only to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and to refer to us whatever they find difficult. And O people! You eat from two plants which I consider nothing but foul. In the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) I saw that if their smell was found on a man, he would be taken by the hand and put out to al-Baqi'. Whoever eats them, let him kill (their smell) by cooking them; they are garlic and onions." Ma'dan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered this sermon on Friday, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away on Wednesday, when four days of Dhul-Hijjah remained.

Amr bin Maymun, relating the story of the killing of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), said: The people said: "Make your will, O Commander of the Believers; nominate a successor." He said: "No one is more entitled to this matter than these people, or this group, with whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased when he passed away." And he named Ali, Uthman, al-Zubayr, Talhah, Sa'd and Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with them). He said: "Abdullah bin Umar will be present with you, but he will have no share in the matter", as if by way of consolation to him. And he said: "If the leadership goes to Sa'd, then so be it; otherwise, whichever of you is made leader, let him seek his help, for I did not dismiss him because of incapacity or treachery." And he said: "I advise the caliph after me regarding the first Muhajirun, that he recognise their right and safeguard their honour. And I advise him regarding the Ansar, who settled in the abode (of Madinah) and (adopted) faith before them, that he accept from those of them who do good and pardon those of them who do wrong. And I advise him to treat the people of the cities well, for they are the support of Islam, the collectors of wealth and a source of rage for the enemy, and that nothing be taken from them except their surplus, with their consent. And I advise him to treat the Bedouins well, for they are the root of the Arabs and the substance of Islam: that (zakah) be taken from the lesser of their wealth and returned to their poor. And I advise him regarding the covenant of Allah and the covenant of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) (with the non-Muslim subjects), that he fulfil their covenant for them, fight (to defend) them, and not burden them beyond their capacity." When he passed away, we carried him out and set off walking, and he narrated the account of his burial. He said: When the burial was over and they had returned, this group gathered, and Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Entrust your matter to three of you." Al-Zubayr said: "I have entrusted my matter to Ali." Talhah said: "I have entrusted my matter to Uthman." Sa'd said: "I have entrusted my matter to Abd al-Rahman." Then Abd al-Rahman said (to Ali and Uthman): "Which of you two will withdraw from this matter, so that we entrust it to him? By Allah, and with Islam (as witness) over him, he will look to the best of them in his view and will strive for the welfare of the Ummah." The two elders fell silent. So Abd al-Rahman said: "Will you then entrust it to me, and I take Allah as witness over me that I will not fall short in choosing the best of you?" They said: "Yes." Then he took the hand of one of them and said: "You have the kinship with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the precedence in Islam that you know. By Allah, if I make you leader, you must act justly; and if I make Uthman leader, you must listen and obey." Then he took the other aside and said the same to him. When he had taken the pledge (from both), he said: "Raise your hand, O Uthman." So he pledged allegiance to him, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) pledged allegiance to him, and the people of the house came in and pledged allegiance to him.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When death came upon Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), Uthman bin Affan, Ali bin Abi Talib, Abd al-Rahman bin Awf, al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam and Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with them) came to him. Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was absent at his land in al-Sarat. Umar looked at them for a while and then said: "I have looked into the people's affair for you, and I have not found any discord among the people concerning you, unless there is something among yourselves; if there is discord, it will come from you. The matter belongs to six: Uthman bin Affan, Ali bin Abi Talib, Abd al-Rahman bin Awf, al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam, Talhah and Sa'd. Your people will only make one of you three the leader. O Uthman, if you are given any charge over the people's affairs, do not place Banu Abi Mu'ayt over the necks of the people. O Abd al-Rahman, if you are given any charge over the people's affairs, do not place your relatives over the necks of the people. O Ali, if you are given any charge, do not place Banu Hashim over the necks of the people. Get up, consult one another and appoint one of you as leader." So they got up to consult. Abdullah said: Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) called me once or twice to include me in the matter, though Umar had not named me. By Allah, I would not have liked to be with them, knowing that what my father had said would come to pass in their affair. By Allah, I rarely heard him move his lips with anything except that it turned out true. When Uthman called me repeatedly, I said: "Have you no sense? Are you appointing a leader while the Commander of the Believers is still alive?" By Allah, it was as if I had woken Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) from sleep. Umar said: "Wait. If something happens to me (i.e. I die), let Suhayb, the freed slave of Banu Jud'an, lead the people in prayer for three nights. Then on the third day gather the nobles of the people and the commanders of the armies, and appoint one of you as leader. Whoever assumes leadership without consultation, strike his neck."
