Ma'dan bin Abi Talhah al-Ya'mari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) praised and glorified Allah, then mentioned the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), then said: "O people! I saw (in a dream) as if a rooster pecked me once or twice, and I see this as nothing other than a sign that my death is near. Some people are urging me to nominate a successor, and Allah Almighty will never let His religion, His caliphate and that with which He sent His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) go to waste. If my end comes quickly, then (the matter will be decided by) consultation among these six people with whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased when he passed away. Whomever you pledge allegiance to, listen to him and obey. Many people will find fault with this; if they do so, they are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. I fought them with this hand of mine for Islam. And I am not leaving behind anything more important to me than 'al-kalalah' (a person who leaves neither parent nor child), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was never as stern with me about anything as he was about it; he (peace and blessings be upon him) jabbed my chest with his finger and said: 'O Umar! The verse of summer at the end of Surah al-Nisa' [Surah al-Nisa: 176] is sufficient for you.' If I live, I will give a judgement on it about which no one will differ, whether he reads the Qur'an or does not read the Qur'an. And I call Allah to witness over the governors of the provinces: I sent them only to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and to refer to us whatever they find difficult. And O people! You eat from two plants which I consider nothing but foul. In the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) I saw that if their smell was found on a man, he would be taken by the hand and put out to al-Baqi'. Whoever eats them, let him kill (their smell) by cooking them; they are garlic and onions." Ma'dan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered this sermon on Friday, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away on Wednesday, when four days of Dhul-Hijjah remained.
