Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that it was said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Will you not nominate (someone as) successor? He said: "If I leave (the matter), then one better than me left it before me, namely the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); and if I nominate, then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was better than me, nominated before me." (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)) said: They praised him, and he said: "With hope and with fear. I will not bear it, neither in life nor after death. I only wish that I could be released from it (on equal terms), with nothing for me (in reward) and nothing against me (as a burden)."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I was present with my father when he was struck (wounded). They praised him and said: "May Allah reward you with good." He said: "(People are) hopeful and fearful." They said: "Nominate a successor." He said: "Shall I bear your affair both in life and in death? I wish that my share of it were just enough to break even, nothing against me and nothing for me. If I nominate a successor, then one better than me nominated a successor; and if I leave you, then one better than me left you, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Abdullah said: So I knew, when he mentioned the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that he would not nominate a successor.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I went to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: "Do you know that your father (Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)) does not intend to nominate anyone as successor?" I said: "Certainly not." She said: "That is what he is going to do." I swore that I would certainly speak to him about it. Then I went off on a journey or a military expedition and could not speak to him. When I returned, I met my honoured father and he began asking me questions. I said: "I heard the people saying something, and I swore that I would say it to you: they claim that you will not nominate (anyone as) successor, whereas I know that if you had a shepherd tending your goats and he came to you having left his flock, you would consider that he had let them go to waste; and tending people is an even weightier matter." He said: He agreed with what I said, paused for a while, then raised his head and said: "Allah Almighty Himself will protect His religion. If I do not nominate (anyone as) successor, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do so either; and if I nominate (someone as) successor, then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) did so too." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When he mentioned only the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), I understood that he would not hold anyone equal to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (that is, he would not prefer anyone's way over his), and that he would not nominate a successor.

Shaqiq bin Salamah said that it was said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): Appoint a successor over us. He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not appoint a successor, so how should I appoint one? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that once Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in his final illness. The people asked: O Abu al-Hasan! How is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: 'Alhamdu lillah' (praise be to Allah), "he is better." Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) took Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) by the hand and said: By Allah, after three (days) you will be the one carrying the stick (i.e. under someone else's authority). I think that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will pass away in this illness, for I know the faces of Banu Abd al-Muttalib at the time of death. So let us go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him about the leadership: if it is to be among us, we will know it, and if it is to be among others, we will speak to him so that he gives instructions concerning us. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will never ask him (peace and blessings be upon him), because if he (peace and blessings be upon him) refuses it, the people will never give it to us after that."

This is the will of Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafah at the time of his departure from this world, when even the liar speaks the truth, even the treacherous one fulfils the trust and even the disbeliever thinks of believing. I nominate Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) as successor after me. If he acts justly, then that is my opinion of him and my hope in him; and if he does wrong and transgresses, then I do not know the unseen, and every person will have what he has earned: "And those who have wronged will come to know to what return they will be returned" [Surah al-Shu'ara: 227].
