Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh bin Amr al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said that some Companions killed a man of the tribe of Hudhayl in the Haram on account of a blood feud from the days of ignorance (Jahiliyyah); he was intending to pledge allegiance to him (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know of this, he became extremely angry. The Banu Bakr went to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and other Companions, so that they could make them intercessors with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When evening came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up among the people and praised Allah as befits Him. Then he said: "Amma ba'd (to proceed): Allah has made Makkah sacred, not any person. It was made lawful for me for a few hours of a day, but then it was made sacred again as before. People are most insolent towards Allah in three matters: first, one who kills in the Haram; second, one who kills someone other than his killer; and third, one who kills out of the rancour of the days of ignorance. By Allah! I will pay the diyah of the one whom you have killed." Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid the diyah.
