Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather, that Qatadah bin Abdullah had a slave-woman who used to herd his goats. One day, when he sent her out to herd them, Qatadah's son from that slave-woman said to him: How long will you keep treating my mother as a slave? By Allah, you will not treat her as a slave any more than you already have. Then he struck him; it hit his hamstring, and he was wounded in his flank, and he died. Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik bin Ju'shum (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: Come to me next year bringing forty, or he said: one hundred and twenty camels. He did so, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took from them thirty hiqqahs, thirty jadha'ahs and forty that had young in their bellies, and gave them to his (the slain son's) brothers, and gave nothing to the father, and said: Had I not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, "A father is not to be killed in retaliation for his son," I would have killed you, or struck your neck.

Amr bin Shu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said that a man of Banu Mudlij named Qatadah struck his son with a sword; it hit his shin, the wound was deep, and he died. Then Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Ju'shum (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him of this incident, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Bring 120 camels for the diyah." He brought them. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took from those camels 30 hiqqahs, 30 jadha'ahs and 40 that had young in their bellies, and asked: "Where is the brother of the slain man?" He said: Here I am. So he said: "Take the diyah. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'There is nothing for the killer.'"
