It is narrated from Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he divorced his wife while she was menstruating, in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Command him to take her back, then keep her until she becomes pure, then menstruates, then becomes pure; then, if he wishes, he may keep her after that, and if he wishes, he may divorce her before touching her. That is the waiting period for which Allah Almighty has commanded that women be divorced."

Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abu al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) informed me that he heard Abd al-Rahman bin Ayman asking Abdullah bin Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both), while Abu al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) was listening. He said: What is your view about a man who divorced his wife while she was menstruating? Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Abdullah bin Umar divorced his wife while she was menstruating in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), saying that Abdullah bin Umar had divorced his wife while she was menstruating. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let him take her back." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned her to me and said: "When she becomes pure, let him divorce her or keep her." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "O Prophet, when you (intend to) divorce women, divorce them for their waiting period." It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Hafsah bint Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with them both) moved (out of her waiting period) when she entered the blood of her third menstruation. Ibn Shihab said: I mentioned this to Amrah bint Abd al-Rahman, and she said: Urwah has spoken the truth. Some people argued with her (Aishah) about this and said: Allah Almighty has said: "three quru'" [Surah al-Baqarah: 228]. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Do you know what al-aqra' are? Al-aqra' means the periods of purity.
Ibn Shihab said: I heard Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman say: I have not met any of our jurists except that he says this, meaning what Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said.

It is narrated from Sulayman bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) that al-Ahwas died in Syria when his wife had entered the blood of her third menstruation, and he had divorced her. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote (a letter) to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), asking him about this. Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to him that when she entered the blood of the third menstruation, she became free of him and he became free of her; she does not inherit from him and he (the husband) does not inherit from her.
