It is narrated from Sulayman bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) that al-Ahwas died in Syria when his wife had entered the blood of her third menstruation, and he had divorced her. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote (a letter) to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), asking him about this. Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to him that when she entered the blood of the third menstruation, she became free of him and he became free of her; she does not inherit from him and he (the husband) does not inherit from her. In the narration of Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) the words are "and he had already divorced her"; the rest is the same.
