Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abu al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) informed me that he heard Abd al-Rahman bin Ayman asking Abdullah bin Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both), while Abu al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) was listening. He said: What is your view about a man who divorced his wife while she was menstruating? Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Abdullah bin Umar divorced his wife while she was menstruating in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), saying that Abdullah bin Umar had divorced his wife while she was menstruating. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let him take her back." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned her to me and said: "When she becomes pure, let him divorce her or keep her." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "O Prophet, when you (intend to) divorce women, divorce them for their waiting period." [Surah al-Talaq: 1]
