Abu al-Akhdar narrates from Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he regarded as disliked with regard to slave-women the same thing he disliked with regard to free women (that is, in establishing relations), except for the specific number. Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This saying of Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) is in accordance with the Qur'an, and we act upon it.

Qabisah bin Dhu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said that a man asked Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him): May two sisters who are slave-women be combined? Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One verse indicates that they are lawful and another verse that they are forbidden, but as for me, I dislike it. He (the narrator) said: The man left Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and met a man from the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: If I had any authority, and then I found someone who had done this, I would make him an example for people. He said: "One verse makes them both lawful while another makes them forbidden, but I would not do it." Then Niyar al-Aslami (may Allah have mercy on him) left that man and met another Companion of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), who asked: "What ruling did the one from whom you sought a ruling give you?" He told him, and he said: "I forbid you from combining them both. If you combine them both while I have authority, I will punish you with a punishment that becomes an example for others."

The Shaykh said: Al-Muzani (may Allah have mercy on him) made a mistake in this, saying that Ibn Umar said "I wished"; rather, it is Ibn Utbah, there is no doubt about it.

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that the saying of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding two sisters who are slave-women was mentioned before Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). They said that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that one verse makes them lawful and another verse makes them forbidden. At that, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: One verse makes them lawful and another forbidden? They are forbidden to me only because of my own kinship with them; their kinship to one another does not make them forbidden, because of the saying of Allah: "And (forbidden are) chaste women, except those whom your right hands possess." [Surah al-Nisa: 24]
