Simak reports from Hanash that two men had deposited one hundred dinars with a woman of Quraysh, on condition that she would not give it to either of them without the other, but only when both were together. One of them came and said: My companion has died, so give me the money. The woman refused, until three years passed in this dispute. That man then took the money through intercession. Then the other man came and said: Give me my money. Then he went to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: Do you have any proof? He said: This woman herself is my proof. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I consider you liable. The woman said: O Abu so-and-so! I ask you to take our case to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). They came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); at that time Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was plastering a cistern with mud in a garden, wearing a cloth as a waist-wrapper. They told him the whole story. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Bring your companion to me, and his goods are my responsibility.
