Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Each of you is a guardian and will be asked about his responsibility. The leader is a guardian and will be asked about his responsibility; a man is a guardian over his family and will be asked about his responsibility; a woman is a guardian of her husband's house and will be asked about it; and a servant is a guardian of his master's wealth and will be asked about his responsibility." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I heard these from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I think he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man is also a guardian of his son's wealth and will be asked about his responsibility, and each of you is answerable for his responsibility."

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Being killed in the path of Allah expiates every sin except the trust. The one who held it will be brought, even if he was killed in the path of Allah, and it will be said to him: 'Fulfil your trust.' He will say: 'My Lord, the world has gone, so from where can I fulfil it?' He (Allah) will say: 'Take him to al-Hawiyah.' Then, when he is brought to the bottom of al-Hawiyah, his trust will be shown to him as it was on the day it was handed to him. He will carry it on his neck, climbing with it in the Fire, until, when he thinks he has come out of it, it falls and he falls after it, forever and ever." Then Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to those to whom they are due" [Surah al-Nisa: 58].
