Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever learns the Qur'an should also learn the fara'id (laws of inheritance), and let him not be like the man whom a Bedouin meets and says: O servant of Allah! Are you a Bedouin or an emigrant (Muhajir)? If he says: I am an emigrant, the Bedouin says: A person from my family has died; how will his inheritance be divided? So if he knows, it is good for him, (a knowledge) which Allah has given him; but if he says: I do not know, the Bedouin will say: Then what superiority do you have over us? You learn the Qur'an but you do not learn the fara'id.

If he says: Do you know the science of fara'id? and he says: Yes, then that is fine; but if he says: No, the Bedouin will say: What superiority do you have over me?

Do you recite the Qur'an? If he answers: Yes, he says: A man of our household has died, so divide his inheritance. If he does it, then that is knowledge he has learned and an increase which Allah has given him; otherwise he will say: O company of emigrants! What superiority do you have over us?
