Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates, salt for salt — sell equal for equal, in cash, hand to hand. Whoever takes more or demands more has taken usury (riba); the taker and the giver are equal in it."

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and narrated to him a hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Abu Sa'id came and stayed in this house. He (Ibn Umar) took me by the hand until we came to him, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: What is this man narrating from you? Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My eyes saw and my ears heard — (Nafi' said:) I have not forgotten how he gestured with his finger as he said it — the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the sale of gold for gold and silver for silver except equal for equal, and said: "Do not make one exceed the other, and do not sell what is in hand for what is deferred."

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "A dinar for a dinar and a dirham for a dirham, with no excess between them." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), accompanied by Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him), walked and came to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him. He said: My eyes saw and my ears heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "A dinar for a dinar and a dirham for a dirham, with equal weight; with equal weight there shall be no excess between them, and what is in hand shall not be sold for what is deferred."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the sale of gold — and he had not heard anything about it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) — that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not sell gold for gold or silver for silver except equal for equal, and do not give one more than the other; I fear usury (riba) for you. The narrator said: A man of the Ansar narrated a hadith from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him). Nafi' said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) took the Ansari by the hand, and I was with the two of them, and we came to Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: O Abu Sa'id! This man has narrated (such-and-such) a hadith from you; what is it? He mentioned it, and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, my ears heard it and my eyes saw it — he repeated this three times. He pointed with his fingers level with his eyes, (saying) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not sell gold for gold or silver for silver except equal for equal; do not sell anything (of it) that is on credit for what is in cash; and do not give one more than the other."

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). A goldsmith came and said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! I fashion gold (into jewellery), then I sell some of it for more than its weight, and I take the extra in return for my labour. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) forbade him. The goldsmith kept repeating his question and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) kept forbidding him, until he came to the door of the mosque and mounted his riding animal. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "A dinar for a dinar and a dirham for a dirham; there is no excess (tafadul) between them (no increase or decrease). This is the covenant the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took from us, and this is our covenant to you."

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "A dinar for a dinar and a dirham for a dirham; there is no excess (tafadul) between them." This was the covenant of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to us, and this is our covenant to you.

Wardan al-Rumi asked Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): I make jewellery, then I sell it and take something extra for it in return for my wages or the work of my hands. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Gold for gold; there is no excess (tafadul) in it. This is the covenant our companion took from us, and this is our covenant to you. Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By "companion" he meant Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).
In al-Muzani's narration from him, al-Shafi'i narrated the story of the goldsmith at length and then said: This is a mistake.

Ata' bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with them both) sold a vessel of gold or silver for more than its weight. Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "He used to forbid the like of this, except equal for equal." Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I see no harm in this. Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Who will excuse me regarding Mu'awiyah? I inform him from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he informs me of his own opinion! I will not live with you in a land where you are. Then Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned this to him, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he should not sell it except weight for equal weight. However, al-Rabi' did not mention, from Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him), Abu al-Darda's coming to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
