Sayyiduna Malik bin Aws bin al-Hadathan said: I was seeking to exchange a hundred dinars. Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) called me, and we agreed on the price between us until he bought from me; he took the gold and was turning it over in his hand. Then he said: Wait until my treasurer comes from the place called al-Ghabah. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was listening, and he said: Do not part from him until you receive the price from him. Then he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, dates for dates and barley for barley is usury (riba), except in hand-to-hand exchange."
(b) In the hadith of Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) it is: until my treasurer or my slave-girl returns from the place called al-Ghabah.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I read it correctly before Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him), and I had no doubt. Then time passed and I did not retain it well, so doubt arose in me whether it was "my treasurer" or "my slave-girl"; but others besides me narrate only the word "treasurer".
(b) Abdullah bin Yusuf mentions from Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) only the word "treasurer".

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) stood and said: "O people! You have introduced transactions which I do not know. Gold for gold — its bullion and its coin — weight for weight, hand to hand in cash; and silver for silver, weight for weight, hand to hand in cash, and it is not right on credit. Wheat for wheat, mudd for mudd, hand to hand in cash; and barley for barley, mudd for mudd, hand to hand in cash. There is no harm in selling barley for wheat, with the barley being more, hand to hand in cash, but it is not right on credit. Abu al-Ash'ath al-San'ani (may Allah have mercy on him) was present at the sermon of Sayyiduna Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him); (he said:) I heard him narrating from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Gold for gold, its bullion and its coin, with equal weight; silver for silver, its bullion and its coin, with equal weight; and wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates and salt for salt, with equal weight. Whoever gives more or demands more has taken usury (riba). There is no harm in selling barley for wheat hand to hand in cash, with the barley being more."
This is the correct version; the established hadith is authentic from Abu Qilabah, from Abu al-Ash'ath, from Ubadah, as a marfu' (Prophetic) report.

Abu Qilabah said: I was in Syria in a gathering in which Muslim bin Yasar was present. Abu al-Ash'ath came, and they said: Abu al-Ash'ath, Abu al-Ash'ath has come. He sat down, and I said to him: O our brother, narrate the hadith of Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: Yes. We went on a military expedition, and our commander was Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). We obtained a great deal of spoils, and among the spoils we obtained were vessels of silver. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered a man to sell them to the people against their stipends, and the people hastened to buy them. When the news reached Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid selling gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates and salt for salt, except equal for equal, kind for kind; whoever gives more or demands more has taken usury (riba). The people returned what they had taken. When this reached Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), he delivered a sermon, saying: What is the matter with people that they narrate hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while we were with him (peace and blessings be upon him) and did not hear them from him (peace and blessings be upon him)? Sayyiduna Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and repeated the story, then said: We narrate what we heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), even if Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) dislikes it — or he said: even if Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) is displeased. I do not care if I do not march with his army for a single dark night.

Abu Qilabah narrates from Abu al-Ash'ath (may Allah have mercy on him): We were on a military expedition, and our commander was Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). We obtained gold and silver as spoils. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered a man to sell it to the people against their stipends, and the people hastened to buy it. Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade them from it, so the people returned the goods, and a man complained to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon and said: People narrate hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which they lie about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while we did not hear those hadiths from him (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: We will narrate hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) even if Mu'awiyah dislikes it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not sell gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, salt for salt, or dates for dates, except equal for equal, kind for kind."

Whoever gives more or demands more has taken usury (riba). Sell gold for silver hand to hand in cash however you wish, sell dates for salt in cash, and sell barley for wheat hand to hand in cash however you wish."

Waki' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "Gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates and salt for salt — buy and sell equal for equal and in cash. If these items differ from one another, then buy and sell however you wish, hand to hand."

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Gold, scale-pan for scale-pan, and silver, scale-pan for scale-pan," until he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Salt for salt." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is nothing. Sayyiduna Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness that I heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
