أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، وَأَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ وَغَيْرُهُمَا، قَالُوا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، أنا الرَّبِيعُ، أنا الشَّافِعِيُّ، أنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أَبِي يَزِيدَ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، يَقُولُ: أَخْبَرَنِي أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " الرِّبَا فِي النَّسِيئَةِ " رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَجَمَاعَةٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ طَاوُسٌ، وَعَطَاءُ بْنُ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ وَغَيْرُهُمَا، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ.
Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Usury (riba) is in credit (deferred) transactions."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، أنا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو صَالِحٍ السَّمَّانُ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " الدِّرْهَمُ بِالدِّرْهَمِ، وَالدِّينَارُ بِالدِّينَارِ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ لَيْسَ بَيْنَهُمَا فَضْلٌ " قُلْتُ لِأَبِي سَعِيدٍ: كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ لَا يَرَى بِهِ بَأْسًا، فَقَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ: قَدْ لَقِيتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ هَذَا الَّذِي تَقُولُ أَشَيْءٌ وَجَدْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ أَوْ شَيْءٌ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ فَقَالَ: مَا وَجَدْتُهُ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ وَلَا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَلَأَنْتُمْ أَعْلَمُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنِّي وَلَكِنْ، أَخْبَرَنِي أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " إِنَّ الرِّبَا فِي النَّسِيئَةِ " ⦗٤٦١⦘ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبَّادٍ وَغَيْرِهِ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، وَأَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو.
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "A dirham for a dirham and a dinar for a dinar, equal for equal; no excess (tafadul) between them is permitted." I said to Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) saw no harm in it. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I met Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said to him: Tell me about what you say: have you found it in the Book of Allah or in the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: I neither find it in the Book of Allah nor did I hear it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); but you know more about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than I do. Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) informed me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Usury is only in credit (deferred) transactions."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، أنا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، أنا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ، وَعَامِرُ بْنُ مُصْعَبٍ، أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا أَبَا الْمِنْهَالِ، يَقُولُ: سَأَلْتُ الْبَرَاءَ بْنَ عَازِبٍ، وَزَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ عَنِ الصَّرْفِ، فَقَالَا: كُنَّا تَاجِرَيْنِ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الصَّرْفِ، فَقَالَ: " مَا كَانَ مِنْهُ يَدًا بِيَدٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ، وَمَا كَانَ مِنْهُ نَسِيئَةً فَلَا " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ دُونَ ذِكْرِ عَامِرِ بْنِ مُصْعَبٍ، وَأَخْرَجَهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ حَجَّاجِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، مع ذِكْرِ عَامِرِ بْنِ مُصْعَبٍ وَأَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَاتِمِ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمِنْهَالِ، قَالَ: بَاعَ شَرِيكٌ لِي وَرْقَاءَ بِنَسِيئَةٍ إِلَى الْمَوْسِمِ، أَوْ إِلَى الْحَجِّ، فَذَكَرَهُ وَبِمَعْنَاهُ، رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمَدِينِيِّ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ رَوْحٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ وَرُوِيَ عَنِ الْحُمَيْدِيِّ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمِنْهَالِ قَالَ: بَاعَ شَرِيكٌ لِي بِالْكُوفَةِ دَرَاهِمَ بِدَرَاهِمَ بَيْنَهُمَا فَضْلٌ، عِنْدِي أَنَّ هَذَا خَطَأٌ وَالصَّحِيحُ مَا رَوَاهُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ وَهُوَ الْمُرَادُ بِمَا أُطْلِقَ فِي رِوَايَةِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ فَيَكُونُ الْخَبَرُ وَارِدًا فِي بَيْعِ الْجِنْسَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا بِالْآخَرِ، فَقَالَ: مَا كَانَ مِنْهُ يَدًا بِيَدٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ وَمَا كَانَ مِنْهُ نَسِيئَةً فَلَا، وَهُوَ الْمُرَادُ بِحَدِيثِ أُسَامَةَ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ.
Abu al-Minhal said: I asked Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib and Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with them both) about (exchanging) gold. They both said: We were traders in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about (exchanging) gold. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever is hand to hand, in cash, there is no harm in it; but whatever is on credit is not permissible."
(b) Abu al-Minhal said: A partner of mine sold silver on credit until the season, or until the Hajj.
(c) In al-Humaydi's narration: A partner of mine in Kufah sold dirhams for dirhams with an excess between them. In my view this is a mistake, and the correct version is what Ali bin al-Madini and Muhammad bin Hatim narrated; and this is also what is meant in the narration of Ibn Jurayj: the hadith mentions selling one kind for the other — when it is in cash there is no harm, and what is on credit is not permissible — and this is what is meant by the hadith of Sayyiduna Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him).
(b) Abu al-Minhal said: A partner of mine sold silver on credit until the season, or until the Hajj.

مَا أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ، بِبَغْدَادَ، أنا أَبُو سَهْلِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ الْقَطَّانُ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى الْبِرْتِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو عُمَرَ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، أَخْبَرَنِي حَبِيبٌ هُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْمِنْهَالِ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ الْبَرَاءَ وَزَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ، عَنِ الصَّرْفِ، فَكِلَاهُمَا يَقُولُ: " نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ بَيْعِ الْوَرِقِ بِالذَّهَبِ دَيْنًا " ⦗٤٦٢⦘ رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ أَبِي عُمَرَ حَفْصِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، وَأَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ.
Abu al-Minhal (may Allah have mercy on him) said that when they were asked about exchange (sarf), both of them (may Allah be pleased with them) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade selling silver for gold on credit."
