Abu Nadrah said: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) about exchange (sarf), and they both saw no harm in it. I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about exchange, and he said: Whatever is in excess is usury (riba). I objected to that because of the view of those two (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them), so Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will narrate to you only what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). A man who owned date palms came with a sa' of fine dates, while the dates of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were of an inferior kind. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is this from?" He said: I took a sa' of my dates and bought this sa' with it — and he said: In the market the price of this one is such-and-such and the price of that one is such-and-such. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have dealt in usury. When you wanted that, you should have sold your dates for a price, then bought whatever dates you wished with that price." Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Is dates for dates more deserving to be usury, or silver for silver? He said: I came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and he forbade me, and I did not go to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
(b) Abu al-Sahba' said that he asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about it, and he disliked it.
(c) Ishaq bin Ibrahim said: The dates of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were of this colour.

Abu al-Jawza' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I served Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) for nine years. Once a man came and asked about (taking) two dirhams for one dirham. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) cried out and said: This man is telling me to feed him usury! The people around him said: But we used to do this on the basis of your fatwa. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I used to give that fatwa until Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated to me from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) "had forbidden it"; therefore I too forbid you from it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that a man of Banu Shamkh bin Fazarah asked (him) about a man who married a woman, then saw her mother, liked her and was attracted to her, so he divorced his wife: may he marry her mother? He said: There is no harm. So the man married her. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was in charge of the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal), and he used to sell the inferior items of the treasury, giving much and taking little. Then he came to Madinah and asked the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and they said: This woman is not lawful for this man, and silver may only be sold weight for equal weight; otherwise it is not right. When Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, he went to that man but did not find him; his people, however, were there. He said: The fatwa I gave in your case is not right. They said: She has already become pregnant (by him). He said: Even if she has become pregnant. Then he came to the money-changers and said: O company of money-changers! What I used to trade with you is not permissible; selling silver for silver is not permissible except equal for equal.
