A man asked him (Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah): "Hand to hand?" He said: This is how I heard it.

Abu al-Ash'ath al-San'ani narrates from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was present among the people while they were selling vessels of gold and silver (on credit) until (the payment of) the stipends. Sayyiduna Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Sell gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates and salt for salt, equal for equal. Whoever gives more or asks for more has taken usury (riba). When these kinds differ, sell them however you wish, hand to hand; there is no harm in it: gold for silver, hand to hand, however you wish; wheat for barley however you wish, hand to hand; and salt for dates however you wish."
This is an authentic narration that explains (the matter).

Bishr bin Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Hammam (may Allah have mercy on him): "There is no harm in buying silver for gold even when the silver is greater in quantity, provided the deal is in cash; on credit it is not permissible. Likewise (there is no harm) in taking barley for wheat even when the barley is greater in quantity, provided the deal is in cash; but on credit it is not permissible."

Sayyiduna Ma'mar bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I sent the slave off with a sa' of wheat (and told him): Go, sell it, then buy barley. The slave went and took a sa' and something more. When Ma'mar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, the slave informed him. Ma'mar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Why did you do that? Go and return it, and take only equal for equal, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Food for food, equal for equal," and in those days our food was barley. It was said: But it is not of the same kind. He said: I fear that it may resemble it.
Ma'mar bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) disliked this out of fear of falling into usury — a precaution on his own part, not a narration.
The narration from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is general; it covers two possibilities: 1. that only a single kind is meant; 2. or that both (kinds) are meant together.
Therefore, since Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) settled one of the two possibilities, it is to that one that one must turn.
