Malik bin Aws (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came forward saying: Who will buy dirhams? Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Show us the gold, (and wait) until our treasurer comes, then come and take your silver. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Never! By Allah, you must either return his gold to him or hand over his silver to him, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Selling gold for silver is usury, selling wheat for wheat is usury, barley for barley, and selling dates for dates is usury — except in a hand-to-hand exchange." Qutaybah said: Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this.

Malik bin Aws bin al-Hadathan said: I came with a hundred dinars wanting to exchange them. Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We have coins, but wait for our treasurer; he is about to come from al-Ghabah. And Talhah took the hundred dinars from me. I asked Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not part from him, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Selling gold for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley and dates for dates is usury, except in a hand-to-hand exchange." Sufyan said: When al-Zuhri came to us, I checked (his narration), and he did not mention these words. The narrator said: I heard al-Zuhri say: I heard Malik bin Aws bin al-Hadathan say: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Selling gold for silver is usury," and he mentioned it exactly the same way.
Sufyan said: This is the most authentic hadith narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on this matter, that is, on exchange (sarf).

Malik bin Aws bin al-Hadathan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I wanted to exchange money, and Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will exchange it for you, but (wait) until my treasurer returns from al-Ghabah. Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Selling silver for silver, gold for gold, wheat for wheat and barley for barley is usury, except in a hand-to-hand exchange."
Thus it is in this narration: "silver for silver, gold for gold."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sell gold for gold and silver for silver equal for equal, and do not sell silver for gold in such a way that one is on credit and the other in cash. If he asks you for time until he enters his house, do not give him time; (deal) only hand to hand. Indeed, I fear usury (rama') for you.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sell gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates and salt for salt, equal for equal. When these kinds differ, sell however you wish, provided the deal is hand to hand."
