Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The leaves of the reserve (hima) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) are not to be beaten down, nor its trees cut; but they may be gently shaken down."

Kharijah bin al-Harith narrates from his father, al-Harith bin Rafi' bin Makith al-Juhani, that he asked Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): We have goats and slaves, and they beat down leaves for their goats from this habalah fruit. Kharijah said: It is the fruit of the samurah (acacia) tree. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No, and again no! The leaves of the reserve (hima) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) are not to be beaten down, nor its trees cut; but shake them down gently." Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) — I think he said — used to forbid cutting the masad." Jabir said: The masad is the axle-pin of a pulley. Ibn Abi Uways said: The reserve is around Madinah.

Muhammad bin Ziyad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: My grandfather was a freedman of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him), and he looked after a piece of land belonging to Uthman in which there were vegetables and cucumbers. He said: Sometimes Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) would come to me at midday with his garment placed over his head, inspecting the reserve so that its trees would not be lopped or their leaves beaten down. He said: He would sit with me and talk with me, and I would feed him some of the cucumbers and vegetables. One day he said to me: "I see that you do not leave this place." I said: Yes. He said: "I am appointing you over what is here. Whomever you see lopping trees or beating down leaves, take his axe and his rope." I said: Shall I take his cloak? He said: "No."
