Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Abi Ammar says: I met Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked: May we eat the hyena? He said: Yes. I asked: Is it game? He said: Yes. I said: Did you hear (this) from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the hyena, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is game, and for it the muhrim must sacrifice a ram when he hunts it."
(b) In the narration of Hajjaj, some said "hunts" and some said "kills".

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The hyena is game, so eat it; and for it there is a fat ram when a muhrim hunts it."

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him), the freed slave of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The hyena is game," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled a ram for it.
Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A hadith like this is not established if it is narrated alone.
The Shaykh (al-Bayhaqi) said: He only said this because its chain is broken; then he supported it with the hadith of Ibn Abi Ammar from Jabir, and the hadith of Ibn Abi Ammar is a good hadith by which proof is established. Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi said: I asked al-Bukhari about it, and he said: It is a sahih (authentic) hadith. The Shaykh (al-Bayhaqi) said: The hadith of Ikrimah has also been narrated with a connected chain.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) ruled a ram for a hyena, a goat for a gazelle, a one-year-old lamb for a hare, and a young goat for a jerboa.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For a hyena there is a ram, for a gazelle a goat, for a hare a one-year-old young goat, and for a jerboa a jafrah (young goat)." I asked Abu al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him): What is «al-jafrah»? He said: A plump, well-grown young of a goat or sheep.

It has also been narrated from al-Ajlah, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, from Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him); (the narrator) said: I can only think that he attributed it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), (saying) that it is a ruling; and he mentioned the report.
The Shaykh (al-Bayhaqi) said: This is closer to what is correct, and the correct view is that it is mawquf (stopping) at Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Likewise Abd al-Malik bin Abi Sulayman narrated it from Ata, from Jabir, from Umar as his own saying.

Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ruled a ram for a hyena, a goat for a gazelle, a one-year-old young goat for a hare, and a one-year-old young goat for a jerboa. It is like this in my book: a young sheep for a hare and a young goat for a jerboa.
