Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said that on the evening of Arafah and the morning of Muzdalifah, when the people began to set off, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep to tranquillity," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was holding back his she-camel, until he entered Muhassir, which is part of Mina, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take small pebbles, the kind with which the Jamrah is stoned." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying the Talbiyah until he stoned the Jamrah.

Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On the morning of the day of sacrifice, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Come and pick up pebbles for me." So I picked up for him pebbles of the kind that are placed between the fingers and flicked, and placed them in his hand. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ones like these, ones like these. And beware of extremism, for those before you were destroyed only because of extremism in religion."

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Mu'adh al-Taymi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When we were at Mina, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us. (The narrator) said: Our ears were opened, so that we could hear what he (peace and blessings be upon him) said while we were in our own places. (The narrator) said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) began teaching us the rites of Hajj until he came to the Jamrahs, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Small pebbles," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his two index fingers one on top of the other. And he ordered the Muhajirun: "Alight at the front of the mosque," and said of the Ansar: "Let them alight behind the mosque." Then after that the rest of the people alighted.

Sayyidah Umm Jundub (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stoning the Jamrah from the middle of the valley, and a man behind him (peace and blessings be upon him) was shielding him from the stones, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "O people, do not kill one another, and when you stone the Jamrahs, use small pebbles."

Sulayman bin Amr bin al-Ahwas al-Azdi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from his mother (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while he was stoning the Jamrah from the middle of the valley, saying: "O people, do not destroy one another; when you stone the Jamrah, throw small pebbles."

Al-Hajjaj said: Ata said: Khadhf pebbles are like the tip of a finger.
Our shaykh was not certain of (the name) Umm Jundub; it is Umm Jundub, as Ahmad bin Mani' said from Yazid bin Harun. Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi said: I asked al-Bukhari about this hadith, and he said: His mother's name is Umm Jundub. I said: And the hadith of al-Hajjaj? He said: I think al-Hajjaj took it from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, and I think it is the hadith of Sulayman bin Amr from his mother.

(a) Jamil bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I saw Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) stoning with pebbles like goat droppings.
(b) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that, disliking to dismount, he used to take his pebbles from Muzdalifah itself.
(c) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He took them, but wherever one takes them from, they will suffice him; however, I dislike taking pebbles from the mosque, lest all the pebbles of the mosque be taken out, and from a garden or latrine and the like, because they are impure, and from the Jamrah itself, because those are pebbles that were not accepted.
(d) The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We have already narrated in the Book of Prayer, from Abu Salih (may Allah have mercy on him) through Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), a marfu' report that "a pebble beseeches the man who takes it out of the mosque."

Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the pebbles with which the Jamrahs have been stoned since Islam came, and he said: "Whatever of them was accepted was taken up, and whatever was not accepted was left; and were it not for that, the space between the two mountains would have been blocked."
In the narration of Sufyan al-Thawri, it is reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "An angel has been put in charge of it; whatever of it is accepted is taken up, and whatever is not accepted is left behind."
Ibn Abi Nu'm (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) about the pebbles, and he told me: "Those of them that are accepted are taken up; and if it were not so, a mountain higher even than Mount Thabir would have formed here."

Likewise (through another chain).
It is reported of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that, disliking to dismount, he used to keep his pebbles ready beforehand.
The hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri has also been narrated as marfu' (from the Prophet) through a weak route.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الحج / 9544
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), these stones with which stoning is done are taken away; it is thought that they are being cut away." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever is accepted is taken up. Were it not so, you would see them like mountains."
Yazid bin Sinan is not strong in hadith, and it has also been narrated as marfu' from Ibn Umar through another weak route.
