Abu al-Zubayr heard Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) saying, while he was describing the Hajj of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that after we had performed tawaf, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to leave ihram, and he said: "When you intend to go to Mina, begin the talbiyah." So we began the talbiyah from al-Batha'.

Musa bin Nafi' al-Asadi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came to Makkah intending Hajj al-Tamattu', and I entered Makkah three days before the Day of Tarwiyah. People said to me: Now your Hajj will become a Makkan Hajj. So I went to Ata' bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) to ask about this issue, and he said: Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) told me that he performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he drove the sacrificial animals along, and they had made the talbiyah for Hajj alone. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Leave your ihram by performing tawaf of the House and of Safa and Marwah, and shorten your hair, and you are free of ihram. When the Day of Tarwiyah comes, make the talbiyah for Hajj, and make this a Tamattu'." They said: How can we make it a Tamattu' when we have named Hajj? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do what you have been told! Had I not brought the sacrificial animal with me, I would have done just as I am telling you; but I cannot leave ihram until the sacrificial animal reaches its place of slaughter." So they did so.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Makkah four days before Hajj and ordered us to make it an Umrah. This made our hearts feel constrained and weighed heavily upon us. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, leave ihram! Had I not had the sacrificial animal with me, I would have done the same as you are doing." He said: So we left ihram, to the extent that we even had relations with our wives and did everything that a person not in ihram does, until, when the night of Tarwiyah came and we had left Makkah behind us, we made the talbiyah for Hajj.

Sa'id bin al-Musayyab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform Tamattu' in the months of Hajj, and if they did not perform Hajj that year, they offered no sacrifice at all.
