Musa bin Nafi' al-Asadi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came to Makkah intending Hajj al-Tamattu', and I entered Makkah three days before the Day of Tarwiyah. People said to me: Now your Hajj will become a Makkan Hajj. So I went to Ata' bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) to ask about this issue, and he said: Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) told me that he performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he drove the sacrificial animals along, and they had made the talbiyah for Hajj alone. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Leave your ihram by performing tawaf of the House and of Safa and Marwah, and shorten your hair, and you are free of ihram. When the Day of Tarwiyah comes, make the talbiyah for Hajj, and make this a Tamattu'." They said: How can we make it a Tamattu' when we have named Hajj? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do what you have been told! Had I not brought the sacrificial animal with me, I would have done just as I am telling you; but I cannot leave ihram until the sacrificial animal reaches its place of slaughter." So they did so.
