So visit the graves, for they remind of death."

Salamah bin al-Azraq was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the market when a funeral passed by over which people were weeping. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) disapproved of it and rebuked them. Salamah said: Do not say that, O Abu Abd al-Rahman! I bear witness concerning Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard him say: A funeral passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was with him, and Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was also there, and women were weeping over it. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) scolded them and forbade them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar, leave them, for the eye sheds tears, the soul is afflicted, and the wound is fresh." They said: Did you hear him say this? He said: Yes. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Allah and His Messenger know best; he said this twice.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The women wept over Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar, leave them." Then he said: "Beware of the shrieking of Satan; for whatever comes from the eye and the heart is mercy, and whatever comes from the tongue and the hand is from Satan." He said: Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was weeping at the edge of the grave of Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was wiping the tears from her face with his hand, or he said: "with the cloth."
Even though this is not strong, his (peace and blessings be upon him) statement in the established hadith, that Allah Almighty does not punish for the tears of the eyes nor for the grief of the heart, but rather punishment comes because of this, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to his tongue, or He shows mercy, indicates its meaning and testifies to its soundness.

Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) died, the women of Banu al-Mughirah gathered and began to weep over him. It was said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Send word to them and forbid them; nothing has reached you from them that you would dislike. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There is nothing against them; they are only shedding tears over Abu Sulayman, as long as there is no loud voice or wailing.
