Bayhaqi 7159 — Reports indicating that weeping after death

Salamah bin al-Azraq was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the market when a funeral passed by over which people were weeping. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) disapproved of it and rebuked them. Salamah said: Do not say that, O Abu Abd al-Rahman! I bear witness concerning Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard him say: A funeral passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was with him, and Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was also there, and women were weeping over it. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) scolded them and forbade them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar, leave them, for the eye sheds tears, the soul is afflicted, and the wound is fresh." They said: Did you hear him say this? He said: Yes. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Allah and His Messenger know best; he said this twice.
