Abu Jamrah narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the first Friday prayer held after the Friday prayer offered in Madinah was offered in a village called Juwatha belonging to Abd al-Qays, which is located in al-Bahrayn.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الجمعة / 5603
Ibrahim bin Tahman (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned it similarly, except that he said: After the Friday prayer in the Mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it was held in the mosque of Abd al-Qays, which is in a village called Juwatha in al-Bahrayn.

Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I used to lead my father (Ka'b bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him) to the mosque after his sight was gone. Once I was taking him to the Friday prayer, and upon hearing the call to prayer my father prayed for forgiveness for Abu Umamah As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him). I waited for some time and kept hearing this from him, but did not ask. Then I took him out for the Friday prayer, and when he heard the call to the Friday prayer he prayed for forgiveness for As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked: O my dear father! Do you pray for forgiveness for As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him) whenever you hear the call to the Friday prayer? He said: O my son! As'ad (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first man to lead us in the Friday prayer in Madinah, before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, in Hazm, the settlement of Banu Bayadah in the area of Naqi'. It was called al-Khadamat. I asked: How many of you were there that day? He said: Forty men.

Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik narrates: I used to lead my father (Ka'b bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him) to the mosque after his sight was gone. Whenever he heard the call to the Friday prayer, he would pray for mercy for As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked: "O my dear father! Why is it that whenever you hear the call to the Friday prayer, you pray for mercy for As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "He was the first person who led us in the Friday prayer in Hazm al-Nabit, the settlement of Banu Bayadah in the area of Naqi', (a place) which is called al-Khadamat." I asked: "How many of you were there that day?" He said: "Forty men."
When Muhammad bin Ishaq states that he heard the narration directly and the narrator is trustworthy, the chain is sound; this hadith has a hasan (good) chain and is sahih (authentic). Another hadith has also been narrated on this subject, but one like it is not used as proof.

Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Sunnah is: "For every three there should be an imam, and when the people are forty or more, the Friday prayer, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are obligatory, because they are a congregation."
Only Abd al-Aziz al-Qurashi narrated it, and he is da'if (weak); reliance is upon what has preceded and what is to come, if Allah Almighty wills.

Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Every village in which there are forty men, the Friday prayer is obligatory upon them.

Mu'awiyah bin Salih (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote: In any village where fifty men gather, one of them should lead them in prayer, deliver the sermon to them, and lead them in the Friday prayer.

Al-Walid bin Muslim said: I asked al-Layth bin Sa'd about this, and he said: Any city or village in which there is a congregation and over which there is an amir, he should command them to the Friday prayer and lead them in it. For the people of Alexandria, the cities of Egypt and its coastal towns used to pray the Friday prayer in the time of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), by their command, and among them lived Companions (may Allah be pleased with them).

(a) A freed slave of the family of Sa'id bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Abdullah bin Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both): What is your view about the villages between Makkah and Madinah? He said: When they have an amir, he should lead them in the Friday prayer.

Ja'far bin Burqan (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote to Adi bin Adi al-Kindi (may Allah have mercy on him): Look, where there are permanent settlements whose people do not move repeatedly from one place to another, appoint an amir over them, and let him lead them in the Friday prayer.
The Shaykh said: What is most consistent with the sayings and practices of the Salaf regarding establishing the Friday prayer in villages whose people are settled, not tent-dwellers who move from place to place, is that this is what Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) meant.

Abu Abd al-Rahman said that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Friday prayer and the Eid prayer are to be performed in a major city.

Al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Umm Abdullah al-Dawsiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if there are only four people in a village, the Friday prayer is obligatory upon them."
Al-Daraqutni said: This is not authentic from al-Zuhri; everyone who narrated it from him is matruk (abandoned), and al-Zuhri's hearing from al-Dawsiyyah is not established.

(a) Al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Umm Abdullah al-Dawsiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Friday prayer is obligatory upon every village in which there is an imam, even if they are only four," until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned three.
(b) Al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates about Sayyiduna Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to Madinah, he led them in the Friday prayer while they were twelve men.
Al-Hakam bin Abdullah is matruk (abandoned), Mu'awiyah bin Yahya is da'if (weak), and this is not authentic from al-Zuhri. A hadith about fifty has also been narrated on this subject, but its chain is not authentic.

Al-Nufayli (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I read to Ma'qil bin Ubaydullah (may Allah have mercy on him) from al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him), and then he mentioned this hadith. This report is munqati' (its chain is broken). If it is authentic, then what is meant is the twelve chiefs (nuqaba) who were sent to Madinah with him or after him, so that he would teach the Muslims the Qur'an and lead them in prayer. Then the number of Muslims who prayed with him is mentioned in the hadith of Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), when Sayyiduna Mus'ab (may Allah be pleased with him) established it at the direction and with the support of Sayyiduna As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him).
