Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he was in haste on a journey he would combine Maghrib and Isha after the twilight had disappeared, and he would say that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in haste on a journey, he would combine Maghrib and Isha.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 5513
(a) Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was called urgently to Safiyyah bint Abi Ubayd while he was in Makkah and she was in Madinah. He set out and travelled until the sun had set and the stars had appeared. A man who was with him said: The prayer! The prayer! Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) kept going. Salim said: The prayer! He said: "When some matter pressed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, he would combine these two prayers." Then he travelled on, and after the twilight had disappeared he combined the two, and he travelled between Makkah and Madinah in three days.
(b) Musa bin Uqbah narrates from Nafi', and at the end of the hadith it says that he delayed Maghrib until after the twilight had gone, until part of the night had passed; then he dismounted and prayed Maghrib and Isha, and said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also used to do this when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in haste on a journey or some serious matter befell him."
(c) Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari narrates from Nafi' that when about a quarter of the night had passed, he dismounted and prayed.

Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he was returning from Makkah, news reached him about Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abi Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with her), so he travelled fast. When the sun set, one of his companions said: The prayer! He remained silent and kept going. Then a companion said again: The prayer! He again remained silent. Then the one who had said "The prayer" said: He knows something about this that I do not know. He kept going, and some time after the twilight had disappeared he dismounted and prayed; on a journey the call to prayer was not given for the prayer either. He combined Maghrib and Isha both, and then said: "When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in haste on a journey, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would combine Maghrib and Isha after the twilight had disappeared." And he would pray voluntary prayers on his mount during the journey, whichever direction the mount faced, and he was informing them that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do the same.
Note: Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) combined these two prayers after the twilight had disappeared; the one who contradicts this is someone who has not memorised the hadiths of Nafi'.

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I set out with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both); he intended to go to some land of his. He halted at a place, and a man came and said: Safiyyah bint Abi Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with her) is in a grave condition, and I do not think you will find her alive. That was after Asr. He set out in haste, and with him was a man from Quraysh. We travelled until the sun set, and he did not tell me (to call) the prayer. My experience of my companion was that he was most careful in guarding the prayer. When he delayed, I said: The prayer, may Allah have mercy on you! He did not even turn towards me. Then he kept going until, at the last part of the twilight, he dismounted and prayed Maghrib. Then the iqamah for the prayer was given, and he led us in prayer when the twilight had already disappeared. Then he turned to us and said: When some matter pressed him (peace and blessings be upon him), he would do like this.
Fudayl bin Ghazwan and Attaf bin Khalid narrated it from Nafi' with the same meaning, but the narration of the huffaz (memorisers) among the students of Nafi' is more likely to be correct.

Zayd bin Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that he said: I was with Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) on the road to Makkah. News reached him of the severe illness of Safiyyah bint Abi Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with her), so he travelled fast until the twilight had disappeared. Then he dismounted and prayed Maghrib and Isha, combining the two. Then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "When he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in haste to travel, he would delay Maghrib and combine the two," that is, Isha and Maghrib.

He dismounted and combined the two prayers. We were too much in awe of him to say to him: Dismount and pray. When the whiteness of the horizon and the darkness of the evening had gone, he dismounted and prayed three rak'ahs and ended with the salam, then he prayed two rak'ahs and ended with the salam. What they objected to in this is only the narration of Yazid bin Abi Habib from Abu al-Tufayl; as for the narration of Abu al-Zubayr from Abu al-Tufayl, it is mahfuz (preserved) and sahih (authentic).
